April 20 (Reuters) - Workers at an Apple Inc (AAPL.O) store in Atlanta on Wednesday filed a petition to hold a union election, seeking to become the company's first U.S. store to unionize amid a wave of labor activity at other major firms.

The effort at the Apple store in Cumberland Mall is backed by the Communications Workers of America, according to a news release issued by the union and workers involved in the effort. More than 70% of the more than 100 workers eligible to join the union - in sales, technical, creative and operations roles - signed cards expressing a desire to organize, the union said.

A spokesperson for the U.S. National Labor Relations Board confirmed that the agency's Atlanta office received the union petition on Wednesday. If certain conditions are met, the NLRB works with the union and the employer to arrange an election.

"We work hard at Apple because we really believe in the products and the company and we want to make sure that every Apple worker is able to afford quality housing and basic living expenses," Elli Daniels, an Apple worker who is part of the union effort, said in a statement.
Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The news of the petition was first reported by Bloomberg Law.

Unionization efforts are gaining momentum at some large U.S. corporations including Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) and Starbucks Corp (SBUX.O). read more

Apple is known for its reticent culture, but last year some current and former workers began criticizing the company's working conditions online, using the hashtag #AppleToo.

Damn the domino effect has started at least the pandemic did one good thing.
It took a damn global pandemic for some people to open their eyes….. And for the most part their eyes is wide open. Most corporations right now need workers so they have no choice but to let this happen or else.

Facts sometimes you need those life changing events to come along but they took advantage of the opportunity.

You look at GM and Ford, selling cars in the largest car market. They have a unionized labor force and are forced into these joint ventures and technology transfer agreements. Tesla is not unionized, and was not forced into any joint venture, the government amply supported them. This dog whistle is sending a message to corporate America that if you want to do business, you better clean house on your Unions.

Many Unions are politically active and support candidates that fight against offshoring and support fair trade with other countries. It might not be the employer that actively fights against you but international forces, especially if you are dealing with a multinational company.

I look at Unionized wages and it wasn't something to brag about, back in the day they made money when these companies were profitable. You still have to negotiate your wages with the employer.
