JONESBORO, Ga. -- The GBI said two men broke into Geneva Strickland’s Jonesboro home, tied her up and set her house on fire with her inside.
Now the reward for information in the case has doubled and her family is hoping the money and two sketches will bring them justice.
The house has been gutted by fire – the floor has fallen in and the place is charred.
“This is all that’s left,” said Jack Ivey, Sr., the victim’s son. “I’ve got a little chair here that I teethed on when I was a baby. It has put a big scar on my life and my family’s life and they’ll find out who did it. We won’t rest until we find out who did it.”
Ivey said his family is in the sign business and will be making new signs announcing a new reward for an arrest and conviction in the murder of his mother – up to $20,000.
“The first thing that went through me was hurt and I lost my breath,” Ivey said. He said the way his 68-year-old mother died is a sign of the cruelty of the killer or killers.
“She died of smoke inhalation. The fire actually started before she died,” said Sherry Lang with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Lang also said Strickland wasn’t able to escape because she had been tied up and bound.
The GBI said it is clear the killer or killers intended for Strickland to die in the fire.
Officials said they believe the suspects set the fire in Strickland’s home to cover up a robbery October 31.
“We know that Ms. Strickland kept large sums of cash in her house,” said Wesley Horne with the GBI.

Her son said his mom was still a drag racing aficionado – even at 68-years-old, she was a woman who lived life to the fullest, a life he didn’t’ expect to end so soon.
“I think whoever did this has talked or they’ve had a change in their lifestyle based on the fact they probably got some money,” said Lang.
Lang said there are two rewards at play – up to $10,000 from Georgia Arson Control for the actual person and $10,000 from the family for both the arrest and conviction.
