RICHLAND, Miss. —
A hostage situation inside a Walmart in Richland ended when a police officer shot and killed the suspect — a 21-year-old woman from Arkansas.
The incident was initially reported about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday by the Richland Police Department on social media, saying, "RPD is working an incident at Walmart involving a weapon. The scene is secure and we will provide updates when they become available." Two hours later, police provided an update, saying, "RPD had an officer involved shooting this evening at Walmart. All of our officers are safe. Walmart is secure and closed at this time. MBI will be conducting an independent investigation."
As the situation was unfolding, Rankin County police and fire dispatch was heard saying, "Is she pointing a gun at people?" This response followed: "Last thing I was told is somebody walked in with a gun and yelled out that they want a news anchor there. I'm trying to get further."

RICHLAND, Miss. (WJTV) – Agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that happened at the Richland Walmart.
According to MBI, the shooting happened at the Walmart off of U.S. 49 around 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday, December 21.
Agents said Richland police were responding to an apparent hostage situation. Police initially said they responded to an incident involving a weapon at the Walmart.
MBI officials said the suspect in the shooting died. There are no other known injuries at this time.
Once MBI completes their investigation, agents will share their findings with the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.
The Walmart was closed Wednesday evening. There’s no word on if the store will reopen on Thursday.

Though Richland police initially reported that officers were working an incident involving a gun, agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation later clarified that officers were responding to an apparent hostage situation taking place in the Walmart location.
At around 5:45 p.m., officers reportedly shot the suspect, and the MBI confirmed that the suspect died from the shooting.
The identity of the subject has not yet been released. The MBI is continuing to investigate the matter and will share its findings with the Attorney General’s office once the investigation has concluded.
It is uncertain if the Richland Walmart has opened back up. SuperTalk Mississippi News reached out for confirmation, but nobody answered the phone.

This is why I only get deliveries left at my front door from Walmart. Something about that place attracts crazy.
I had Walmart delivery through the pandemic. Nice service.
I dropped it cause I was paying 100 for that, 60 for Costco and whatever for Amazon. Too many subscription services plus fresh fruits and vegetables I like to pick out for myself.
Good way to avoid the crazies though. Now I just go at like 7am, nobody crazy is up and out that early.
Yeah all those services add up, I'm cool with Walmart since it has paramount+ bundled in with it so it's not too bad for as often as I use delivery from them, and since I'm in Florida there's crazies 24/7 the mad and insane don't rest here lol
