Wine Suggestions?

I'm trying to get more into wine but I don't know anything about it. A friend put me up on riesling but I want to be able to pair it with food and be able to order in restaurants without having to ask for suggestions. I know the general rule of thumb is white wine with chicken and fish and red wine with beef or italian food. Plus, I got the correct glasses for each kind - now all I need is the knowledge. Anybody got any tips?

Ahhh, Reisling is my favorite wine. I drink the Columbia Winery label.

But for reds, a good Merlot, Cabernet or Pinot Noir is good. Although right now I drink Shiraz.

Great whites are Chardonnays, Pinot Grigios and Sauvignon Blanc.

Then you have blushes like White Zinfindale and White Merlot. And a rose' which is just a white and red wine blended.

All of these wines are great for cooking depending on your dish.

I don't do high end vintage wine unless it's a special occasion. But nonvintage are generally what people are drinking.

My suggestion to get started is to go to a wine tasting. You will be surprised how much fun you'll have. They generally will have a few chefs sponsored by popular vineyards too.

I used to have a list of the few black owned vineyards here and there was one I sampled a few years ago based in S. Africa.

I will have to research and update the post with the information if and when I find it.

I just a fan of pinot grigio. Don't even matter what brand. Just fill my glass.

I am a big fan of full bodied reds. Malbec, Carmaniere, Temperanillo, red zinfandel, syrah, certain shiraz/cab blends, like that. There are really amazing wines from Chile and Argentina now that are real inexpensive and real good, like around 10 a bottle but tastes like it costs much more. Good stuff coming out of Cali now too.

:yes::yes::yes:

I like the South American Reds. And the South African Whites.

With me I drink wine but i am far from a cynosure. If I like it I drink it. All that this goes with that and opening your palate is whatever to me. Just eat, drink, and be merry.

Cheers

I'm not a fan of full-bodied red wines. If I drink a red it'll be something fruity like a Pinot Noir. I prefer a pinot grigio or sauvignon blanc. You can pair most red wines with red meat like you said and with pasta dishes. Maybe since I don't eat red meat thats why I don't like red wines. I also don't really like Spanish wines, they are usually bitter as all hell . . . I'm also a fan of blended wines. Beringer makes a nice blend of Chardonnay / White Zinfandel.. and there are plenty others.

A bottle of Merlot never disappoints.
Merlot is one of the smoothest red wines you will drink.

This is good info. I'm a dude so I don't drink much wine. The only time I have it around is when my mother comes to visit. She's into Merlot, or anything red. I've heard about the benefits of a glass of wine with/after a meal for a while. When I drink I mess with (dark) liquor and beer. I've also heard that they are good for people (in moderation) as well...On the real, this could go in to the forum brother BRUHA proposed about health and fitness if that gets off the ground. Happy New Year SOL, be safe, healthy, and prosperous in 2008!
