The Wii is only 100K units behind the Xbox 360 in the U.S. and given the sales rates for the two consoles, Wii should be surpassing 360 soon.
Taking into account the May video game sales data, it's apparent that Nintendo's momentum will enable the Wii to soon surpass the Xbox 360 in the U.S. The Wii's installed base reached 10.2 million units while the Xbox 360 installed base now stands at 10.3 million units – and that's with a year's head start for Xbox 360.
Deutsche Bank analyst Jeetil Patel pointed out that Wii sell-through had been averaging 351K units per month for the first half of 2007 when supply constraints were especially tight, but during recent months in 2008 Nintendo has been able to better address pent up demand. "Nintendo Wii's performance in recent months clearly demonstrates that it continues to be the leading console in the market," said Patel.
The Xbox 360 continues to lead in software, however. "While we expect the Wii hardware installed base to surpass the Xbox 360, on the software unit side, Xbox 360 still dominates with about 79 million software units sold to date, compared to only 54 million units for the Wii," said Patel.
For comparison purposes, the PS3 installed base now has reached 4.5 million units.
____________
xbox 360? PS3? big debate and war..
but say what you will the wii is dominating this generation... and while software sales are lead by 360... wii still has a great ratio of in house software being sold and their wii console is pure profit... it has not budged its price once....
to date the wii play (mini game with controller) has beaten out halo 3, gta4, and still many contenders to come
who's got may's NPD numbers?
