Mainly its because of how quickly he was able to convince people that he could beat Hillary. I think the Clintons are disliked, even by democrats, but that the seeming inevitablity of thier victory kept a lid on dissent, especially within the party. Now that Obama has shown he can handle prime time, all bets are off.
THE BIGGEST shock to me was that he survived the racial blitz that the Clinton's put on in the south. The Clinton's new the racial game wouldnt play up north or out west (Nevada, Iowa, New Hampshire), so the waited for South Carolina to srping thier trap. They sought to paint Obama as the black candidate (cocaine, slum lord, cocaine, Jesse Jackson, cocaine), not b/c they are racist, but because they WANTED Obama to play the race card. They wanted him to declare himself black in order to win South Carolina, and thus destroy any chances he had with the white voters. It was a very clever politics, but Obama saw it coming and didnt fall for it. He never played the race card, still he won 80% of the black vote, and even held his own with the white voters.
More importantly, the democratic establishment realized the dirty game Billary was playing, and they have begun to turn against them, even faster than before, as evidenced by Ted Kennedy's endorsement of Obama. With Kennedy, Kerry, and hopefully Edwards supporting Obama, it signals to the party, and to the white and latin people across America that yes, it is ok to not support Hillary. I think the democrats were always with Hillary out of practicality and not principal, but now thier heads and thier hearts seem to be in the same place. The Clinton's now have a serious problem, and thier lame ass celebration in Florida was a testament to that. In S.C., they played thier ace in the hole, and they came out in even worse shape than before. Now Edwards is out, and whoever gets his supporters will probably win the nomination. He is unlikely to support Hillary, especially since his campaign was built on being the anti-Hillary.
I cant say for sure, but I believe that the democrats may have been pushing Edwards to get out of the race, with a promise of a high profile position, DNC party chair, attorney general etc, but that he was holding out for a V.P. position. However, with such poor showings in Nevada, S.C., and Florida, his leverage was going down and not up, so he had to quit before he got trounced again on Feb 5. Perhaps he goes to the highest bidder between Hillary and Obama, but if Obama can get Edwards on board, it will add the unions, the white males, and the far lefters to Obama's camp, after that, its all but a done deal....
