Why do people always say "Where Is Al Sparpton"?

Ok fam,
Stick with a minute. When a incident happens that involves unequal justice for Black people, why do some of you always ask "Where is Jesse Jackson?", "Where is Al Sharpton?" as if they are the only ones who can stand up for equal justice under the law.

I was listening to Michael Baisden today and he mentioned the fact that Martin Luther King was 27 when he lead the civil rights movement. Jesse Jackson was younger than him. Malcolm X was 28. Marcus Garvey was a mere 24!!!!

Wouldn't a better question to ask yourself is, WHERE THE HELL AM I? WHAT AM I DOING? We are so quick to pass negative judgement on these Black men, but that have endured injustices for over 30-40 years.

When are we going to accept the torch and let those brothers (the ones are still living-- Dick Gregory, Farrakhan, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson et. al) take a REST and retire?

It's the Jesus-is-coming-as-your-savior, lincoln-freed-the-slaves, sooner-or-later-help-will-come syndrome

To appease whites, blacks have started to repeat the same shit they say. In a way it allows them to say what they want to say without saying it.

Sort of like Oprah having certain guests to say what she really wants to say but can't......

Your 100% correct sir . . .

Lo, the same ones who say where is Sharpton are REALLY just being condescending.

Sharpton ONLY takes high profile cases they say.

Remember some blacks are invested heavily in the system (white imperialism) they cloud the issue when a black person is mistreated until the conversation changes into 'black people need to take responsibility '

I suppose they feel the president has their best interest at heart (mental slavery) . . . Something MUST be done to these ones . . .

Re: Why do people always say "Where Is Al Sharpton"?

The funny thing is those who say "Where is Jesse/Where is Al?" are the same ones mad when they DO show up. Then they say, "Why they gotta show up with that ambulance chasin!?" "Who nominate them black leaders?"

Can't win with those mofos.

It's a catch 22!!!! I'll tell you this though they are the black leaders and they have taken and assumed these roles. Jesse Jackson hails from Dr. Kings "camp" so the equal justice lies in him to lead us. Everybody can't be leader. Everybody can't be a Chief....there has to be some Indians in the batch.

It is not about black leaders. We need black leadership. Black people are the only people whose movement gets stopped with one bullet.:smh:. If we had more abundant and diverse leadership it would be hard for the enemy to stop black progess.

EXCELLENT POST
I WAS THINKING ABOUT THIS VERY THING EARLIER TODAY
RIDING HOME IN MY CAR.

THE SAME ONES WILL NOT SUPPORT THE JENA 6
OR ANY OTHER MOVEMENT THAT REQUIRES THEM TO HELP THE NEXT MAN
AND BE A PART OF THE BLACK OR ANY COMMUNITY FOR THAT MATTER.

THEY WILL NOT SHOW UP,
SPONSOR ANYONE TO ATTEND,OR
PUT FUNDS TOWARD THE LEGAL DEFENSE OF THE YOUNG MEN
NOR WILL THEY EVEN WEAR BLACK ON THE 20th
IN SUPPORT OF THE CAUSE.
THEY WILL CONVINCE THEMSELVES AND TRY TO CONVINCE OTHERS THAT THEY NEED NO HELP AND NEVER WILL THEREFORE IT DOESNT EFFECT THEM.

WHY ?
BECAUSE IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THEIR SELF RIGHTOUS
HUBRIS WAY OF DOING THINGS.
MANY WILL WAIT TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS CASE
BEFORE THEY DECIDE HOW THEY SHOULD RESPOND IN THE FUTURE
BASED ON AN OUTCOME THAT THEY WILL HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH YET ONLY CRITICIZE FROM THEIR COMPUTER NO MATTER HOW IT GOES.

I've been saying this forever up here. The same people always asking about them, are the very ones always criticizing them. They are supposed to be everywhere handling every single situation that happens or is questionable that happens to us.

This is not a simple answer as to some may suggest. The first and foremost reason that there is no one in place for the younger generation is because the younger generation do not FEAR the Lord.

These men that you mention have Reverend attached to their titles. They are somewhat respected in the mass media to a degree becasue of their belief system of Evil verses Good.

Another thing, when these men were in the middle of their battles...the didn't seem to have that much power as in after their deaths...they became myrte for their causes. In the South back then Southern Black preachers didn't care too much for Malcom or Martin...They were considered trouble makers.

The younger generation have a problem.

1 Samuel says...

:1
And the men of Kirjathjearim came, and fetched up the ark of the LORD, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the LORD.
7:2
And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjathjearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after the LORD.
7:3
And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.
7:4
Then the children of Israel did put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, and served the LORD only.
7:5
And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the LORD.

Our young men are serving false Gods and according to the past...When the lord lift his hand off of the situation..All bets are off...If the young Black man don't return to God...He is DOOMED. We have to Turn back unto the Father and stop our sinning.

It's a catch 22!!!! I'll tell you this though they are the black leaders and they have taken and assumed these roles. BINGO!

Al Sharpton has been preaching since the age of 8 years old and I think he said he is 56 now..To try to call someone a leader will only put you in a big mess. A leader has to be groomed and primed by trial and fire. Here is a story the preacher was talking about tonite and this is why I love the Lord so..Because he has left a history of how and what Holy men had to go through while living as a man on earth.

1 Samuel 8
8:1
And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.
8:2
Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beersheba.
8:3
And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.
8:4
Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,
8:5
And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
8:6
But the thing displeased * Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.
8:7
And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
8:8
According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.

Because Al and Jesse are the only ones the media pay attention to. What you guys don't understand is that reverends used to be in the Black community what rappers, singers, athletes, and Oprah are now. The church was one of the things that led us out of slavery. Over the past 40 years, we've seen the end of the MLKs, Malcolm Xs, and have seen the emergence of the Creflo Dollars, TD Jakes, and Juanita Bynum. They're less about political movements and more about money. The thing is that the Black celebrities who followed them are the same way, so Al and Jesse are the last ones who come from that generation that had some integrity. Not to say that they have integrity, they just remind people of the leaders that did.

There are leaders everywhere, but they wont get a story on the news, regardless of what they do until they're able to recruit Al Sharpton or Jesse to come and stand next to them. It really is a media perception thing, more than a reality. I know 10 people more qualified than Jesse Jackson, but they didn't stand next to MLK, so nobody gives a fuck what they have to say.

i was wondering when our people would take a stand against the racism that is alive and well in this country

It's the Jesus-is-coming-as-your-savior, lincoln-freed-the-slaves, sooner-or-later-help-will-come syndrome

I think I might have to re-title my book!.

If so I'll holla!.

"Where is Al Sharpton" translated means "someone please tell me what I should do now or how I should think or feel about this situation please"

i've said this before, and i'll say it again:

1. bill cosby is the NEW "leader" of black folks apparently... but where was he when jesse, martin, & malcolm, etc. went thru all that hell???

2. jesse, big al, and even bill cosby SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES... not for me. and it's wrong to "ASS-U-ME" they speak for the collective black race.

3. who are the white, asian, and latino leaders of the "community," and why are we the ONLY race that supposedly need these so-called leaders?

the problem isn't appointing someone to take over for these cats. the problem is getting others to realize that YOU speak for YOURSELF... and that you have your own voice.

lesson #1: don't EVER let another person define who YOU are. never!!!

MaxxDog, I was thinking about No#3.

Decided to do a quick google search on "Latino legal representation".

Don't have the time to do a search now on asian etc.... but you'll get the point. I may have to break it out in another thread.

They do have leaders. look at a sample of websites:

http://www.nclegalclinic.org/pages/LatinoAdvocacy.htm
Immigrant Outreach Program

Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic's intensive Immigrant Outreach Program provides the following assistance to the members of our new immigrant community.
Latino Advocacy
NCLC recruits and trains non-attorney volunteers, many of whom come from local Indianapolis churches, to assist non-English speaking clients having difficulties caused by language and cultural barriers; obtaining a driver's license, opening a bank account, understanding the concerns/objections of landlords, etc. NCLC follows up with these concerns and provides legal representation should the problem develop into a legal issue.
Las Clases de Poder: Preventive Law Education
NCLC sponsors two live educational workshops in heavily populated immigrant neighborhoods where speakers address issues that directly impact our low-income latino residents. Topics include:
  • Immigration Issues
  • Housing discrimination
  • Traffic law
  • Landlord/tenant issues
  • Taxes
  • Other community concerns
Spanish-English-Spanish Interpretation and Correspondence Translation
NCLC provides interpretation throughout the handling of their legal cases and during educational classes to ensure that our Spanish-speaking clients receive fair representation. NCLC will also translate incoming and outgoing correspondence.
Videos
With help from our community partners, NCLC has produced four videos in Spanish to distribute free of charge. Topics include:
  • immigration law
  • traffic law
  • criminal procedure
  • tax issues
  • domestic violence
Educational Brochures and Neighborhood Newspaper Articles
NCLC publishes legal educational articles in neighborhood and Latino newspapers and magazines. Educational brochures are also distributed in both english and spanish at neighborhood events, health fairs, and other community events covering critical legal issues such as:
  • ITIN Numbers
  • Earned Income Tax Credit
  • Predatory Lending
  • Safe Driving
  • Landlord/Tenant Issues

Don't have much time this morning but I think it is a fallacy that asian, latino etc don't have leaders that look out for them in a society that historically preys on minorities..........

Can't hate on none of that.

One of the reasons that question comes up is because too often, those two stick their noses in even when it's not needed.

Secondly, white liberals tend to want to only address us via one or the other. Manly because they pretty much know how they will answer pre-written questions. The idea being to assist them to keep us in line based solely on what their "known" responses will likely be. White republicans like Shawn Hanniety will do the same but the approach is usually different. But even he is aware of how they will answer a question and he makes his case based on that.

Just my observation and opinion.

You're kidding right? These two cats RUN LIKE HELL toward race-related publicity. Al Sharpton has been chasing ambulances (and, moreover, self-interest) since the days of Tawana Brawley. Jesse Jackson's career was jump started when he ran around with "MLK's blood" on his shirt. The point is, these two opportunists jockeyed for the position of "Black Leader." They won't be moving over any time soon.

At any rate, I understand what you're saying but I wouldn't blame the common black man. Most of the cats I know are far too busy trying to put food on the table and work along side these white folks without killing them to come home and say, "I think I'll form a march to protest the Jena Six situation."

Mr Divine.... either I've been mis-reading you over the last coupla of months or you're going through some type of metamorphisis.

Personally, I don't believe it was the intention of people like MLK or Brother Malcolm X that we be "dependent" on them for our entire lives. There comes a time when we all have to "step up" to the next level and do more for ourselves, regardless of how harsh and cruel the world can be.

One of my personal heroes is Malcolm X. It was the autobiography of Malcolm X that turned on the lights in my head about taking individual initiative to improve ones self. Malcolm was a very dedicated to the idea of "self" education. I read his autobiography once a year for almost 10 years. Its a very "powerful" and inspirational read, with thanks to the writer Alex Haley.

Peace,

I think you are misreading him. He's advocating that black folks become their own leaders and stop relying on the likes of Jesse and Al.
