Which genre turns you on?????

With the advent of CG and a whole new set of technology that is now available there are movies being made now which would never have been possible before. But the downside to it is that some of everything is out there now and it is starting to feel as if you have watched or seen some of this before when u go to the theaters.

What genre do you like to see and what would you recommend as some of the best movies you have watched in your opinions.

Awards unfortunately are no longer an indication of how good a movie is or was unfortunately so lets talk about some of the underrated movies which you have discovered after saying let me give it a chance and hope it surprises me.

Man, I can't think of any recent movie, off the top of my head that has or had me excited. In the past, there were movies that I couldn't wait to see, but now?...case in point, a movie like Cloverfield....haven't seen it, yet, but how many times can you see a movie where NYC is destroyed? Where are the new ideas Hollywood? I love comic strips, but even with CG, the characters in those movies don't have the mass and size that thery do in the comics. I like to see Black date movies/love stories, but they all seem to have the same cast & story. Hollywood recycles so many ideas, movies, it's just harder for me to bother to go see them. We need new, real storytellers.

For me its still sci-fi but there really hasn't been many good sci-fi films in the last 20 or so years.

The Matrix was great but each episode got worse. Same thing with Alien, Star Trek and Species. The only exception is Star Wars. There's many great sci-fi movies that need to be remade instead of doing sequels to movies that really weren't that good to begin with.

Well from the genre just shoot because you have a gun from which u just watch and enjoy the bullets fly.

I liked Die Hard movies, Last Man Standing and Shoot em up. Plot be damned the gun fights were the shit. Chow Yun Fat had some nice ones in that genre too.

I am a fan of the old style detective stories, character-driven mysteries and noir dramas, which is why most of the stuff I watch is on Turner Classic Movies.

I haven't had a chance to catch it yet, but want to see "No Country for Old Men".

I am also a big fan of Sci-Fi, but like Mo-Better stated there hasn't been anything good out there. Battlestar and Heroes kept me interested for a bit, but lost their luster. Unfortunately, I hear that this year a remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" is coming out -- with Keanu Reeves in the role of Klattu. Another classic film will be destroyed.

Cool post homie,

I am a sucker for a good psychological thriller,

I was hooked to that dexter shyt on showtime......

and off the top of my head, that last costner shyt, mr brooks was pretty damn good, the not so funny to me dane cooks really nailed his role in this one....

as far as cgi shyts its hit or miss.... I couldnt wait to see 300, but I AM in no rush to see shyt like beowolf and that new medeivel flick out now..

it all seems like a knock off...

I AM waiting for the black history cgi's to come out, like some Zulu or HAITIAN revolution shyt.....

I honestly am not a fan of thrillers but Deep Rising and Eight Legged Freaks had me laughing enough to stay and watch them.

I could stand Underworld but too much gore and i am gone.

I'm a TCM, AMC junkie, also. I hadn't heard about the remake of Day the Earth Stood Still..sounds right though...The effects weren't "special" in that old movie, so it's ripe for the pickin. I wish they wouldn't redo it, but nothing's sacred, it seems.

Did anyone here watch Guess who is coming to dinner with Sidney Poitier. That was funnier to me than the remake.

A lot of the older movies have more oomph to me than some of the new stuff.

Braveheart and Armageddon were the shit. Good shit of course.

In the war genre Full Metal Jacket is touted as one of the best and while i did enjoy the movie i am not sure if it is deserving of the title.

I like random movies from all genres...

like the movie Pie, The Fountain, Blade Runner, Lake House, Brazil, Children of Men, the X Files...

Now looking at what I've put down, I'll be damned if not one of the movies I've listed is not a genre within a genre...the main one being Sci-fi...

The title of this thread threw me off. I don't get 'turned on' by hollywood movies but the ones I like best are movies with good plots with and good actors regardless of genre. Usually with ensemble casts. Shit like 12 Angry Men, Crimson Tide, Glory, Training Day, Casino, Othello, A Few Good Men, Interview with a Vampire, etc. I mean yea special effects and shit are way cool but I like to see cats try to out act each other

Gotta wholeheartedly agree on Guess Who's Coming To Dinner..Great movie & cast. But Armageddon? I've seen it and it was ok as a 2 hr escape...but that movie was bad on MANY levels.

I definitely agree. I have yet to see a remake that was as good or better than the original. Hollywood seems to think that if they remake an old black-and-white movie, throw in color and special effects, it automatically makes it better than the original.

What is worst is that this short-attention-span generation of today is not even aware of the superior original movies and concepts that today's movies try to emulate. People fail to realize that black-and-white movies weren't just movies filmed without color, but that they were an art form all of its own. Especially, the classic films from the 40s and the 50s where shadow, darkness, shot angles, etc., brought drama or terror to a scene.

Lately I've started to watch some world cinema films.

There are some good films out there e.g City of God (Brazil), Amelie (France) Whale Rider (New Zealand), Battle Royale (Japan) etc. They are so refreshing to watch as most of the hollywood genre is all so predictable at times.

As for what types of films I'm into, mainly sci-fi, horrors (good one that is) and westerns.

I been a mystery/crime hound since a kid. One of my favorites is Clue.

There is a lot that I haven't seen...just saw Boyz n the Hood like a year ago...New Jack City was three years ago...Blade Runner...I can go on...

But foreign films are the best.

;)

Well;)

I like Science Fiction. Especially Science Fiction that is dark and has a sense of hopelessness to it.

I'm sick of comedies and "slice of life" movies about people having hard times and then making it big. I deal with enough of that bullshit in school and work. When I come home I just want entertainment. Hence is why I like dark Science Fiction.

Now what I recommend in Science Fiction..

1. Battlestar Galactica-Not the old series but the new on that is on Sci-Fi Channel. It is very deep, dark. I believe March 2008 is the last seson though. I will miss that quality show.

2. Chronicles of Riddick--It stars Vin Diesel. Only did average profits at the box office. However it was a very good movie with the cinematography looking something like science fiction art on a science fiction novel. Great movive with great story.

3. Terminator movies and the new series Terminator:The Sarah Connah Chronicles---I enjoyed the dark nature of that movie.

4. Alien movies--Another dark science fiction movie. Love the first one the best.

5. Event Horizon---Little hard to understand. However, if you are educated and understand some basic physics, it is an enjoyable movie.

6. Star Trek, Espcially Star Trek-II, III, and VII--Star Trek is just a fun movie.

7. Doctor Who---Another fun British Science fiction.

That is all I can think now. However I like Science Fiction a lot. ;)
