Today is International Cat Day, but every day is Cat Day here in NYC, where even non-cat-owners or "dog people" can savor the splendor and hauteur of felines 24/7, with a visit to the local bodega!
Yes, bodega cats are technically illegal, but who else will make sure the lettuce is fresh and that the newspapers are warm? Oh, yeah, and if there are mice or other vermin, the bodega cat will likely chase them around once and then settle into that empty box of chewing gum—and possibly become your favorite New Yorker along the way.
This may actually be the Year of the Bodega Cat, what with Netflix hit Russian Doll featuring one named Oatmeal; a wonderful story about a stolen bodega cat being reunited with its humans; and a Saturday Night Live tribute from John Mulaney!
