In the interim, is there a way on our end to change it back to something brighter?

Light Mode is the Default, but everyone has the option to change it to light or Dark.

If you don't see the editor option. Click on the three dots to the far right. Click the brackets and that switches on the full editor with the emojis. Click the threw dots to the right of the image icon and you will see the smile face icon. Click that to get to emojis.

Then they can make the change to Dark Mode.
