Joss Whedon confirms he will direct "Avengers" (Reuters)Source: Reuters Thu Jul 22, 2010, 11:55 pm EDT Comments Buzz up! Share email imdel.ici.ousdiggfacebook

SAN DIEGO (Hollywood Reporter) - Joss Whedon confirmed at Comic-Con on Thursday that he is, indeed, directing "The Avengers."

"It's not an official thing, I think because Marvel couldn't afford a press release," the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator said during a panel with fellow fanboy favorite J.J. Abrams. "So can we make that an official thing? I'm directing 'The Avengers.'"

The project is based on a Marvel comic all-star series that brought together Captain America, the Hulk and Iron Man, among others.

"I am still writing an outline. I'm still in that stage," Whedon said. "I will say the thing I love about it, the thing that made me excited to do it, is how counterintuitive it is. These people shouldn't be in the same room -- and that is the very definition of family."

During the fan Q&A, Whedon cited Abrams' 2009 "Star Trek" reboot as a recent inspiration, while Abrams praised the upcoming "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World."

"'Scott Pilgrim' is awesome. I loved it," Abrams said. "This is the gold standard for a teen movie, a summer movie, for any movie that's come out the last few years."

The comic-book adaptation, starring Michael Cera of "Juno" fame, will be released on August 13 via Universal. Edgar Wright ("Shaun of the Dead," "Hot Fuzz") directed.

Looks like I'll be getting into more arguments with my Comic Books buds over this.

I feel that Whedon is not the best choice to direct this film. Dude has only directed ONE film. And that was "SERENITY", which if anything, was an overextended TV episode of "FIREFLY", and cost about $40 million to make. And it barely made its budget back.

Whedon's directorial scope is just too TV for a film of this magnitude. He should have had more films under his belt before this choice was made.

I wish Whedon the best of luck. But as when he back out from the "WONDER WOMAN" project last year due to a variety of pressures, I see the same thing happening here.

Dawg, how can you say "that was serenity" like it was some bullshit?
Have you ever watched "firefly" good ass syfy show!

Dude,

I loved "SERENITY".
I was a HUGE fan of "FIREFLY".
And I own the DVDs of both.

But actually READ what I said.

It has nothing to do with the content of those shows. It has more to do with Whedon's directorial ability to go BEYOND a TV framework.

"THE AVENGERS" will be a massive undertaking for Whedon.
Sure Whedon's been a screenwriter, script doctor, etc. in Hollywood for years. But other than "SERENITY", he hasn't directed anything to prove he can handle a film of "THE AVENGERS" scope.

Then again,
One can only look at the success of JJ Abrams to see how that Dude took off in film. Tom Cruise gave Abrams a chance based on "ALIAS". And he went on to direct IMO the BEST of the "MISSION IMPOSSIBLE" film series. And later, "STAR TREK".

I wish Whedon the best. But he better have a strong spine to deal with MARVEL Studios which is banking everything on this. Or else have "ALIEN 3"-like debacle on his resume

Yeah, that really killed David Fincher's career.

Look IDIOT!

I was bought that up as a legendary Hollywood story.

Of course it said nothing about Fincher's future. Though he stepped from film for a few years to go back to directing music videos and commericals. Only to come back with "SE7EN". That due to Brad Pitt coming to Fincher's defense. Especially in regards to the film's ending.

Anything Else?

Why the man got to be an idiot? what about these other ones?

Nothing "legendary" about it. Fincher had a darker vision and didn't deliever the "pop" film people expected. But no one doubted his talent based on that film.

Though he stepped from film for a few years to go back to directing music videos and commericals.

Lots of great music video directors dipped their toes into features back then. It wasn't a guarantee of future work. He naturally went back to being one of the all-time great music video directors. He clearly needed film material that matched his dark vision (and which he could control). It was just a matter of time.

Number 1: It's BLUNT!!!

Number 2: Did YOU actually READ what I posted?

I used the Fincher story as a possibility for what can happened to Whedon, just as I used to JJ Abrams story as another one. This is Hollywood. This type of shit goes on all the time.

BTW...

I've been a fan of Fincher's since "ALIEN 3". I still argue about it with friends. I loved it. It had a British Horror feel to it. Every one I know still HATES it.

Joss never let me down with Buffy. Or the Firefly. I say we give him a chance. John Favreux surprised us with Iron Man. *shrug*
