from what I understand, they actually wanted him out. He played sax at first, when they were more of an instrumental band.

They had a decent amount of success, but when he wrote a few hits, they kinda resented him, cuz his music was much softer than the funk band they wanted to be.

He went off to do a solo album with every intention of coming back, but they had different plans. They wanted to get back to their harder core roots.

They didn;t see their mistake until later, that's when they tried with "Nightshift", which was the closest they ever got to another hit without him. SMH.
