All Season vs Snow Tire Mega Mashup: The Ultimate BMW Winter Tire Test
( http://www.TFLcar.com )

What's better in the snow...all season tires or snow tires. The answer seems pretty clear but you maybe surprised by just how much better winter tires are on ice as Emme found out in this TFL tire Mega Mashup review.<iframe width="853" height="480" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/lAKquU17T-U" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

That's a BMW instructor. That seemed like an exercise or test set up not only for the fast lane car but many other tester/drivers. I've been to BMW school and he is a real nice and maybe one of the most patient instructors of the team. It is different when he has as deadline or quota of drivers to meet by the end of the exercise. Emme Hall was just trying to see how much more she could get away with, which meant BMW and tire rack would have to get out of task and schedule.

That's the problem with most people they think having a 4x4, AWD, or 4WD with good all season tires or having an SUV will make them handle the winter weather better. Sure having something with power to all 4 wheels better makes it easier to drive in cold weather, but you can't beat getting a good snow tire for your car, don't care what brand it is or what model it is. But if you live in parts of the US or Canada that's know to get ALOT of snow and ice, think about getting a good pair of snow tires for winter. On the plus side it'll save your other set of tires and make them last longer.

Even if you live in the parries provinces, a good set of Snow Tires at least gives you a better grip during the winter, sorry but I don't trust all-season tires all that well because they're not true all season, they're just more or less a summer tire.

I don't like "comparisons" like these. Lets not pretend every all-season tire is the same quality, or every winter tire is the same quality. There are all-season tires that perform better or comparably in snow than certain winter tires. Their general statements about the differences and compromises are true, but its not that simple.
And more importantly, lets not pretend like when someone hits ice they're starting from a full stop. They're going 30-70 mph (50-110kph), and at that speed, a long stretch of ice is going to put you in another lane, if not the ditch. It doesn't matter what tires you have.
Let's see similar testing they do for snow tires: at speed hitting a stretch of ice on a straightaway and while making a turn, and seeing the real world differences. That would truly show people the value of winter tires vs all-seasons.

Some all-season tires are bad and some are worse. No all-season tire performs as well as a winter tire on snow or ice.
Ask Tire Rack.

I'm sure if you ask tire rack that's the crap they will tell you. Why would they want you to only buy one set of tyres to do everything when they can sell you allseason and winters? That's an extra set of tires invested in and two swap overs they get to do on every car each year. Do the maths for yourself but this little advert stands to make them a nice christmas bonus.

I was thinking i would have got out of the car and left that shows how dedicated they are to their viewers and for that they have all my respect.

It's because it's staged. There are set "tests" where the winter tyre will make more difference and that's all they want the viewers to see.

I find myself a little more confused than normal. I can't figure out whether :-
1) I've seen all this before.
2) I've got a major case of deja vu, or
3) Some time ago, I saw the future.
It's very puzzling.

It's a very similar video (advert) to one someone else did a year or two back. Can't remember if it was autocar or someone but it was a similar, staged thing where it was obviously set up to get the press saying buy winter tyres or you will lose control and die. Winters are better in the ice but some of these stunts (TC on, different driving lines, etc) are pretty cheap ways of making the tyres look better than they really are.
Notice how tyre rack and BMW are there - both who have very closely linked winter tyre programmes.

This makes me want winter tires but is it really worth swapping out tires just for the winter? I have xdrive in my BMW and it works pretty well in the snow. Hell, I never even plow my long, uphill driveway and my car still makes it up that in the winter!

Why wouldn't he let Emme try without the traction control?
The BMW manuals even say to take off traction control when driving in deep snow or slush to keep the cars momentum going. That way you don't get stuck. I don't know how that translates to ice and was curious to see the difference. I think it would help while accelerating and turning for both snow and ice.
This will be my first winter with my E39 so I'm going to carefully test that theory out. I don't have winter tires, but I have brand new all season tires with good snow ratings, so we'll see.

+eternyman Agreed. I think its just a thing they put in so to say "well the manual told u not to do it". Use as every person sees fit.

Again, I feel that TFL is losing credibility by airing pieces like this. This should have clearly been a paid advertisement from Bridgestone. They should have refused to air it when the BMW jerk denied the removal of the TCS. They can manipulate the ABS, the TCS and other computer systems to MAKE the all-seasons behave much more poorly than the winter tires. I was really hoping to see TFL take their stuff to the next level journalistically, but this seems like a step backwards.

Do we really need a dedicated video to test the difference between all seasons and winter tires? Thank you, Mr. Obvious. What would have been more informative is a test between winter tires.

So the question is, what happens if you sipe the living hell out of M+S tires

there are tire siping machines. (see on youtube). it helps, but still not optimal because of the tread compound itself. That is one of the key features (as stated by TireRack) of a winter tire.
the newer segment of all-season tires are the what Nokian calls "All Weather Plus" tires, which are All-season tires that still have the mountain-snowflake logo, which signifies its superior traction in winter conditions. Of course, they make compromises elsewhere. Aside from Nokian WR G3 (and the WR & WR G2 before it), you have Vredestein Quatrac and more recently, Hankook Optimo 4S (not available in the US). These tires are great for people in the Quebec province of Canada which have mandatory snow tires (and can get fined If you don't have them) laws for Nov through (I think) April, as they don't need to have 2 sets of tires (ie no storage).
