First up, she wanted to discuss what we printed a year ago including her alleged marriage to her friend Chosen, her strained relationship with her mother author Bebe Moore Campbell, and the rumor that 112's Daron is the father of her daughter.
What began as a quick phone call to dispel rumors turned into a full-fledged interview. Maia soon jumped on all the rumors that have circulated over the years about her including why she cut off her hair, the rumor that Fat Joe "hit it," what really happened between her and singer Tyrese, and mostly she wanted to let everyone know that she's not crazy. In fact, the actress and sometimes video girl admitted to a battle with drugs. She explained that that may have been the reason people thought she was nuts.
With several projects on the table including movies and a singing group called Sudden Ones, Maia is ready for the next chapter in her life.
niki: So you wanted to clear up the story that we printed in our July 2003 issue about you being married to Chosen.
maia: No, I am not married; definitely. Not married to D. "Chosen" Wilkins. We're just good friends. He's a group member of mine. In the past we have had some very personal situations, but none of that went as far as intimacy or marriage. It was very brief and he's just a good friend. So basically, we never had any type of wedding whatsoever and it was definitely not a million dollars.
niki: We also reported that your mom didn't show up at the wedding.
maia: That is so funny. My mom would've been there. She would've been putting the whole thing together. I know there have been certain things that went around in circulation about the relationship that my mother and I have, but my mother knows what's best for me. She's been there. She's part of the reason I became who I am today and she's just a wonderful person.
niki: Let's talk about Daron from 112.
maia: Oh lord.
niki: Actually, we reported that it was rumored that Daron was the father of your baby, but that wasn't true. We were right about that.
maia: Yeah, you were definitely right on that one. [Laughing] That's funny because our brief encounter was very brief. I heard a long time ago when I first had my baby that Daron was my baby's daddy, but he's not. The father of my daughter is my ex-husband. But Daron is a wonderful guy. I would have loved for him to be the father of my child, but he's just a good friend that's been there for me.
niki: Tell me about your group, Sudden Ones.
maia: The group Sudden Ones came together and it started with me as an actress. I had a record deal with Atlantic Records probably about a couple years ago. I was signed back in '96. I was dropped from the label in 2000 because of creative differences and change of staff. Chosen was like, "Girl, you need to go ahead and start singing 'cause you can sing and you just got it going on. You're like a Janet Jackson or something." So we worked with that idea for a long time, but after certain artists, who are actresses came out with albums?and no, I'm not talking about J.Lo, I'm talking about other people who are compared to me?they decided to drop albums and really messed up the whole plan.
niki: So right now you're focusing on the group?
maia: Yeah, we're focusing on the group. We're probably gonna be like an edgier version of City High. We're taking risks with this and a more upfront approach. Put it like this: Girls, these are the songs you waited to hear. I don't advise kids to buy the album.
niki: Oh, so it's gonna be raunchy [laughing]!
maia: It's gonna be very raunchy. Raunchy isn't even the word.
niki: Right now you're trying to get a deal?
maia: Actually, we have three offers on the table. We waited to renegotiate management contracts to see who we were gonna deal with before we get involved in those things. But it looks like we're gonna be closing one very, very soon.
niki: And you just had a baby. Congratulations on the baby.
maia: Thank you. Thank you very much.
niki: Is the baby a girl or a boy?
maia: It's a girl.
niki: So you have two girls now.
maia: Yep, two baby girls that's gonna stay out of the limelight. I cannot have them out there like that.
niki: What else are you working on?
maia: I have several movies coming out. I have one movie called Sweet Potato Pie, which stars me and a couple other people. Another movie called Envy, which is with me, LisaRaye and Ray J. We have a movie called The Trial; I have a little part in that one. Well, Envy's supposed to be released in the summer of 2004. The Trial, they have yet to put a date on it and Sweet Potato Pie is already out. It's actually in video stores. I have another one, With or Without You, with Wendy Raquel Robinson and Cynda Williams. That'll be coming out soon. I've got another video that we're working on. Of course you know I do the video thing. Oh, let me clear that up about Tyrese. We forgot about that one.
niki: Oh yeah [laughing].
maia: Now this is like the biggest?. Everybody wants to know about this one.
niki: But you know he actually talked about that in the July 2003 issue. Did you see what he said?
maia: Oh yeah. I'mma get you, Ty. I can't believe he actually said, "Is she really that big?" But Tyrese and I, we were friends. We were dating at one time. I don't appreciate how he went across other magazines and said how he "hit it." You know, putting the sex life out there. But Tyrese will be Tyrese and I wish him all the luck. We're still good friends. I actually last spoke to him when he was filming Too Fast, Too Furious and he was kinda excited about that. He did a very good job in that. Tyrese...boys will be boys.
niki: Let's talk about the video thing. Are you worried about doing too many videos and being known as just a video girl?
maia: I feel like this: anytime you're on anything that's on national television and you're seen at all times, it helps your career. So I don't feel skeptical about becoming this video girl 'cause I know I'm not just a video girl. I'm a singer, I'm an actress; and I can get films, movies, TV sitcoms, little parts, as well as [being a] video girl.
There was a time that they only went for light-skinned girls in videos. And now I'm just out to represent for all the dark-skinned girls out there. Now they're putting me in videos and stuff...like Fat Joe, who's Spanish, who actually put me in his video. Jaheim, who did the "Just in Case" video. And Tyrese, I thank him for his video. So I definitely think it's a good job for people who are working and who just have a lot of time off to do videos. It keeps your publicity going and keeps people wondering if you and this person are together. And nothing happened with me and Fat Joe.
niki: Oh, that was a rumor too? I hadn't even heard that one.
maia: Yes! Everybody was like, "Fat Joe hit it, Fat Joe hit it." Fat Joe didn't hit it. His wife was on the set the whole time. She's the sweetest person in the world and they have a very wonderful relationship. And Joe never disrespected me. Nothing ever happened with me and him. Nothing ever happened with me and Jaheim. All I can say is he was a nice person. A nice, sweet, down-to-earth person. Kinda ghetto. Really, really ghetto. But I would love to work with him again on another video. And get paid the same amount that you paid me again to do the video.
