Light cotton t shirts that hang off properly
Jeans and I seen some nice Jordan's that was solid black with no logo or all that other bullshit on them that look like they had animal skin print on them... They didn't have a size 14 so I ordered them

Just yesterday I was lookin into
Kenzo and Moncler polos and sweaters
2xl's are a bit sporadic so we'll see

cardis over button ups and jeans with runners or the right casual sneaks
Sweaters and sometimes the waistcoat over button ups with or without a fly lil tie with slacks/dress britches and some grown up ass jagu/papi68 shoes
A couple denim shirts over tees with light colored painses (these slightly faded olive jeans though, #woo) and boat shoes or runners if im feeling sneakerish
I love when it gets cool outside, time to get fly. Peacoat season I can hear chicks getting moist when I walk past. Lol
I need to go shopping though. All these fall birthdays then Xmas, I need to go hustle up a secret shopping spree check.
Fall for me usually means new jeans(mostly Levi's and any PRPS joints I grab on sale, sale going on now but not much left), denim washed khakis (gap and g star raw is usually a good mix)
For tops, ehhh... You know how shit can be in NY, it's give or take what the fall will be like so it depends on my jacket. On the warmer days I'll probably just rock a tee with either a trench (Cole Haan, Burberry, whatever you find and like), a leather moto jacket (BLK DNM 5 or Schott NYC for a bigger selection), or my plain black Nike destroyer varsity.
Sweaters and shit is more of a winter wave, like @Fright Night mentioned some of the Kenzo sweaters are kinda dope, everybody(designers) will probably bite that wave though. Coach dropped a fall 1941 line that has 2 or 3 Kenzo-esque sweaters with a T. rex and rocket ship

That's what I love bout North Carolina. All 4 seasons but none of the extremes (summer is pretty damn close though)
Fall = best season. Nothing more comfortable than making a quick run to the store in basketball shorts and a hoodie. Soon as that temp drops to between 55 & 70, I'm long sleeve button down or t-shirt with light sweater over it and a pair of Levi's jeans for when I go out and hoodie w/ jeans & kicks for casual days. 1 more month to go 
co-sign 100%... You can't fake it in the winter, you're either fresh or not. Ralph and Tommy still have some dope cardigans casual shirts as well, but you have to put the leg work in and go to the mall to find most of the dope shit, you the online stores usually aren't the full selection

A button DOWN is a dress shirt with a collar that buttons to the front of it.

Here in florida so probably what cats wear in the summer or spring and then will rock my company hoodies when I can. Not a name whore but I will grab a couple tops from Brooks brothers with Lo jeans and Wallabys. Hopefully can find some fly ones for the fall. May hit my man up the dyes them but shhhhhhhh......

I stay away from the button up/down terms all together, it's too confusing. Like you said, after Hov started that shit people just started calling everything a button up. It's either a dress shirt or a sport/casual shirt

I've been eyeing a Burberry trench at 2 different outlets one in Chi the other in Pembrook Pines. Trying to decide on the cut and color.
