What part of OUR history that you know about, but are surprised other blacks don't?

These past few weeks concerning the movie RED TAILS, got me thinking. I never got caught up in the hype of the movie because I've read books on the Tuskegee Airmen and I've watched the original HBO movie several times. Plus being a black man in the Air Force I was naturally drawn to their story.

What got me thinking was the way some people were talking about the film and reacting to the story. As if it had never been told before or was some kind of cover-up that was recently revealed to the world.

I was in a band with a drummer who thought the Underground Railroad was the first subway system. He honestly didn't know about it. He was from Miami.

Christianity is a new religion and was never designed for black folks. I heard/read a quote somewhere that simply stated: We had all the riches of the world at out disposal. We were invaded by crusaders with bibles in hand and traded all of our riches. Now we have all the bibles and they have all the riches.

This right here! I am continuously amazed at how much black people embrace the religion our slavers handed us. This is why I left the church. To embrace christianity is to be thankful for slavery. I can't abide that.

You dare steal the teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and present it as your own? Woe onto you! It would have been better for you to tie a milestone around your neck, cast yourself at the bottom of the sea, than to plagerize the teaching of the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad to whom all praises is due!

The 1 that really confuses me that black people don't know about really is just that they don't question the religion and cultures we practiced before slavery.

Re: What part of OUR history that you know about, but are surprised other blacks don'

Black Wall Street - an all Black city in Tulsa Oklahoma where Blacks had their own Banks, law firms, hospitals, the whole nine. Racist White people, including the military bombed it from the sky and burned it to the ground. Despicable.

Back in the 70's, my school used to give us comic books about black history. That's how I learned about Bill Pickett, Bronco Sam, and others.

The first person to officially own a slave in Virginia was black.

more importantly his son.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anderson_Ruffin_Abbott

Anderson Ruffin Abbott, M.D. (7 April 1837 – 29 December 1913) was the first Black Canadian to be a licensed physician. His career included participation in the American Civil War and attending the death bed of Abraham Lincoln.[1][2

Abbott applied for a commission as an assistant surgeon in the Union Army in February 1863 but his offer was evidently not accepted. That April, he applied to be a “medical cadet” in the United States Colored Troops but was finally accepted as a civilian surgeon under contract. He served in Washington, D.C. from June 1863 to August 1865, first at the Contraband Hospital and then at the Freedman's Hospital. He then went to a hospital in Arlington, Virginia. Receiving numerous commendations and becoming popular in Washington society, Abbott was one of only eight black surgeons to serve in the Civil War, a fact that fostered a friendly relationship between him and the president.[3] Abbott was among the group who stood vigil in Petersen House over the mortally-wounded Lincoln in April 1865, and Abbott kept "minutes" recording Lincoln's condition through the night before his death on April 15.[4] Mary Todd Lincoln later presented Abbott with the plaid shawl that Lincoln had worn to his 1861 inauguration.[1][2][3]

Mine:
Americans think the first time black folx were introduced to Christianity was after becoming enslaved. Ethiopia had Christianity as its official religion centuries ago. According to biblical text it was introduced to them in biblical times. It is the primary religion there today:

Re: What part of OUR history that you know about, but are surprised other blacks don'

We had a spiritual system that suited our needs before the advent of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam and it is still being practiced by blacks who have maintained their culture and way of life.
