What have YOU done for you community lately?

I am a Vice President of my neighborhood association it takes up alot of my time. We have 200 homes that cover seven streets.

My biggest issues are to keep the peace with the Homeowners to the people who rent homes. The ones who rent usually do not care about the neighborhood.

By leading by example...... Why do you feel you have to volunteer to make a difference..... Nothing wrong with volunteering but your life should be a prime example already

Your life should be a prime example of what? Becoming successful? Being a good person? That's great but how does that help the kid who doesn't have the same access to resources and knowledge that you had to get where you are? It doesn't, which is where volunteering/community involvement comes into play. Passing the knowledge and skills on to others that you used to better your life, to enable others to better their own is what really makes a difference.

I know you're saying you should try to be a good role model, but that should go without saying, and is also why simply setting an example is not enough (there are plenty of prime examples out there, but not nearly enough people willing to give back their time to create new ones). Showing people that it's possible to become successful, get an education, "make it out the hood", etc. may give people inspiration, but teaching them how to do it gives them a means to meet or surpass the bar you set.

I was once a high school algebra teacher....still willing to go back to teaching one day....

Excluding monetary donations, because they really don't do shit, and anything that you gain profit from, what have you done lately to better your community?

Me:
Teach elderly/less fortunate basic computer skills including maintenance and basic web skills (email, browser, etc.) every other Saturday w/Goodwill.

Survey communities and teach disaster preparedness (so niggas don't end up like Katrina victims) twice/month with the Red Cross.

There are more projects to get involved with but this is what I do now. I did not start this thread to brag, I started it to gauge the amount of service people on this board actually commit too and maybe spread ideas among the members. Add yours.

Freed myself of the mindset that says its okay to call my people niggas while talking about what I'm doing to help them. :hmm:

 so in other words nothing

Incorrect assumption on your part bro; one having nothing to do with what my comment to you addressed.

As to the things I've done, and still do for the community, I feel no need to brag about them. I've always held the viewpoint that you don't boast about helping people, your actions are enough. Nor do you hold your activities up as a way of shaming others who aren't doing what you do. Do your thing and keep it moving; those of the right mind and heart will follow of their own volition.

Still, kudos to you for your positive activities.

havent done much for my community lately - I think I'm like a lot of "good brothers" dont know really how to get involved ,and not a lot of spare time.between work ,family, school ,fucking, sleep

I feel motivated by this thread to help make a change

I'm currently the director/teacher for a community based spanish class program that holds class at recreation centers/parks. My class is 100% black folks and it's a beautiful thing, they are shocked at how different learning spanish from a brotha is than learning it from other native speakers. I started doing it 4 years ago and now I have the program in 3 other communities with friends from college working for me. The class is free of charge and all ages and I'm paying all fee's out my own pocket. I have some students who have been comming since I started and its really like a family now.
