I am a believer in great fighters doing great fights. Even if that means moving up or down. Cotto has a chance to get revenge and possibly move up in weight. I think if he wants more than a check he will look to do that. But he is in a hard place. He has two active fighters that destroyed him still out there. Before he thinks of moving up he has to beat one of them. This is his chance. And if he wins he can go after Sergio. Which could be a ok fight. Cause Sergio isnt getting younger.
That is totally contradictory. You believe in great fighters doing great fights then how is this a great fight when one of them clearly is not one. He already had his "get a check" fight, it was Mayorga. C'mon fan of great fights, shit on this guy for taking another bullshit fight.
He doesn't have to beat either of them to move up. Those two things aren't even connected. Arum and Roach have said Pacquiao isn't fighting anymore jr middleweight fights and Steward is not letting Cotto fight anymore welterweight fights so that fight isn't going to happen. Margarito is done as a serious fighter so Cotto wins by just having a greater career.
After this weekend I'm pretty convinced that the winner will be fighting Kermit Cintron since he's a Top Rank guy. I think Cotto or Margarito at the top of their game at this point will beat the mortal shit out of that dude from what I saw this weekend. Cotto ain't fighting Sergio. No Top Rank guy is fighting him, especially after all the shit his promoter talked about Arum.

With the poor performance of Paul Williams, Cintron was wholly underreported. If he fights the winner, that would be even worse since he's not just a has been like Margarito, he's a never-was.

True. But judging from Arum's whole past style, that would be the next "logical" fight. Especially if Cotto wins. An all Puerto Rico card in PR or MSG? That's "marketable" for Arum. Or Margarito/Cintron III. And then they'll feed Cotto to Chavez.

It is only a contradiction because you are not listening to me. Cotto is not a great fighter. He is a good fighter. And this is a great fight for him. He can try to make a fight with Sergio if he wins. But it is really about one thing afterthis fight. Does he just want a check or does he want to be great?
That sounds like Arum. He's very savvy at niche marketing which was one of the reasons Mayweather left, as he wanted to be a big mainstream star/celebrity, not just a top boxer.
We agree that Cotto's not great. I've thought that for years but why wait until this bullshit fight to make that determination? He got Mayorga. Now go fight some real comp. This isn't pro wrestling with storylines and angles and shit, it's a real sport with real rankings and champions.
Well storylines matter. Hear Hagler, and so many other fights. Boxing lives on rivals fighting each other. I mean look at PBF. He clearly stated belts dont matter. So if belts dont matter. Clearly fighting the best doesnt matter. Then all you have left are compelling stories behind fights these days. Look at pwill. That fight was all about if he could move passed his last defeat. That is where we are with boxing now.

Let's look at PBF. Belts stop mattering when he won them all and they stopped when he didn't need them. Cotto hasn't gotten to that level, most fighters haven't, so belts mean something to them.
Storylines are meant, in real sports, to augment the fight not be the sole reason for the fight. That's the difference between boxing/MMA and pro wrestling (other than the predetermined outcomes, of course).
A, arguably in this case, compelling story that doesn't lead to a meaningful fight is a waste of time, something fighters don't have much of to begin with.
That would be a compelling fight with real consequences. Cotto-Margarito II isn't even an eliminator (unless Cotto loses). Horrible, indefensible fight.
