Broncos receiver Wes Welker has been suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL’s policy against performance-enhancing drugs.

According to multiple reports, Welker tested positive for a banned amphetamine.

Welker becomes one of the highest-profile NFL players to be busted for a PED violation. Welker led the league in receptions three times while with the Patriots, and he was a component of the best offense in the NFL last year with the Broncos.

Wes Welker suspended four games for PED use

Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker will be suspended the first four games of the 2014 season for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug (PED) policy, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

A positive test for any substance in the NFL's PED program results in an automatic four-game suspension, even for a first-time offense. MHR first heard about Welker's potential suspension last week, but could not confirm the rumor. We have heard that Welker might not have known he ingested an illegal substance at the time. However, a player does not have to knowingly take the banned substance, per the policy; each player is responsible for what he puts in his body.

Welker, 33, is Denver's starting slot receiver, one of Peyton Manning's favorite targets, and a key component to Denver's record-setting offense from a year ago. In 2013, Welker caught 110 passes for 778 yards and 10 touchdowns. He is expected to play a major role in what many see as a Super Bowl season for the Broncos in 2014.

This is the second Broncos suspension to be announced in the last week. Matt Prater, the Broncos' record-setting kicker, will miss the first four games of the 2014 season with a suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Welker suffered his third concussion with the Broncos a week ago against Houston. He was cleared to fly to Dallas and exercise on the field before the Broncos' fourth preseason game and had been cleared to practice this week.

While we're all extremely disappointed by this, the silver lining to this suspension is that this gives the injured Welker over four weeks to rest, without fear of suffering yet another concussion.

We got a drunk kicker and a receiver who took PED's..........what an eventful week, before the season....:lol::lol::lol:

DENVER -- Denver Broncos kicker Matt Prater will be suspended for the first four games of the regular season for a violation of the NFL's substance-abuse program, multiple team sources confirmed following the team's 18-17 preseason loss to the Houston Texans.

Prater, who has been in the league's program since an August 2011 DUI arrest, acknowledged the suspension to the Broncos and confirmed the four games to The Denver Post on Saturday night before he left Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

The suspension is alcohol-related, according to the newspaper.

Prater was originally facing a year-long suspension, but attorney Harvey Steinberg told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that he got the penalty reduced to four games.

A Broncos spokesman said the team would have no comment on the suspension. Prater and Broncos coach John Fox had a brief discussion in the locker room following the game.

Prater played in Saturday night's game, making a 32-yard field goal and missing a 49-yard attempt.

He has been subject to increased testing in the league's substance-abuse program since he was charged in August 2011 with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a crash.

At the time, Greenwood Village, Colorado, police said Prater's blood alcohol level was recorded at 0.142, or nearly twice Colorado's .08 limit. Team sources said Saturday that the latest test that prompted the suspension was conducted earlier this offseason.

The team doesn't expect Prater to appeal the suspension.

Prater made 25 of 26 field goal attempts (96.2 percent) last season, including an NFL-record 64-yarder in December against the Tennessee Titans. His career 82.9 percent success rate ranks first in franchise history, and he has made 51 of 54 career attempts in the fourth quarter or overtime.

He also led the league in touchbacks on kickoffs in both 2012 and 2013.

The Broncos will give the waiver wire a close look in the coming days and do have a rookie in training camp, Mitch Ewald. Ewald missed his only attempt Saturday night -- a 36-yarder that he pushed left.

Prater's suspension is for four games, so, because of the Broncos' bye in Week 4, he wouldn't be eligible to return until the Monday before the Broncos face the New York Jets on Oct. 12 at MetLife Field.

Prater would have to be formally reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

The Broncos also opened last season without one of their starters when linebacker Von Miller was suspended for six games for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

Re: Wes Welker suspended four games for PED use

Broncos, Walker and the nfl knew since May ... but info is just coming out now?????!!!!

They had Ray McDonalds business out there before he got out the clink ....

What piss me of tho is that he got the suspension, appealed the suspension, had the suspension upheld and appeal denied, THEN you hear about this. Said something about giving him a chance to redeem his name? What the fuck? I thought I was tripping but then Marshall Faulk just asked the same question.

It don't usually work like that..... Usually you'll get that suspension, it's ANNOUNCED, then the player appeals. But it's still known that you got popped for PED's........

I’m just out here working hard every single day, just trying to be the best poster I can be....

I saw that, Marshall was the only one raising that question, WHY IS IT JUST NOW BEING ANNOUNCED...? Of course Irvin's bama ass just skipped right over that.

Call me crazy but I think this is a good thing. He gets mandatory rest time for his concussion. Cody Latimer, if you don't know, get to know.
