Well here we have a Black man going after the "thug", giving a description to the cops of the man, his car and license plate, risking his life not knowing if the "thug" could turn around and try to kill him, but not a single word of recognition by the cops or citizens. Mr. Edwards gave the cops the license number yet the cops did not track this "thug" down over 4 hours. Just how long does it take this stupid police department to access the DMV or their own data base to get the licensee and address of this murdering pig? obviously way too long.

Body of missing Missouri girl found in home of elementary school coach: police

A body believed to be of missing 10-year-old Hailey Owens, pictured, was recovered in a Springfield home belonging to an elementary school coach, police said Wednesday.

A Missouri grade school coach has been charged in the murder and kidnapping of a 10-year-old girl whose suspected body was found in his basement with what police said was a gunshot wound to the head.

Craig Wood, a football coach and teacher's aide at Springfield's Pleasant View K-8 School, was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder in the death of Hailey Owens, whose body police believe was found in a storage bin.

The little girl was last seen walking just a block from her home at 4:48 p.m. Tuesday when a terrified couple called 911 to report her seen being swept up by a man in a prowling pickup truck.

Michelle Edwards, who witnessed the attack with her husband, told police that the man driving the vehicle — with long grey hair — pulled over to her and asked for directions, calling, “Hey, come here a minute,” according to the felony probable cause statement.

Edwards said when the child ignored his attempt Wood got out of his car and threw her into his vehicle "like a rag doll."

"I can't believe he didn't see us sitting in our garage. It was right here. I could see him plain as day, I could see her plain as day," her husband, Carlos Edwards, told News-Leader.com

Craig Michael Wood was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of first-degree murder in the abduction of the child that was witnessed by neighbors who chased after his vehicle and called police.

The vehicle, whose license plate number was caught, then sped off with Carlos Edwards chasing it from behind.

It wasn’t until 8:30 p.m. that both the vehicle and suspect were found by police outside an E. Stanford Street home. Missing from the vehicle was Hailey.

Authorities said their search for the vehicle was slowed when the vehicle’s plate number was found registered to Wood’s parents, taking their investigation to their address instead.

When Wood was approached outside his home that night, police said he had a roll of duct tape in his hand which he threw in the bed of his truck.

A search warrant for his home obtained early the next morning led to officers being greeted by the smell of bleach radiating from his home’s basement.

There police say is where they found the child’s body, hidden inside one of two plastic storage bins, stacked on top of the other.

Inside the bottom tote "was what appeared to be the body of a small child," concealed inside two trash bags, according to the police statement.

The child's body had ligature marks on her arms and what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the base of her skull, according to Tom Van De Berg, chief investigator for the Greene County Medical Examiner's Office.

A spent .22-caliber shell casing was also found in the basement.

Police told the Daily News Wednesday night that it is "too early to tell" whether more charges will be filed against Wood. An autopsy is expected this week.

Police Chief Paul Williams said the girl’s parents have been alerted of the find. He said they have “a high degree of confidence that it is Hailey Owens,” but are awaiting the results of an autopsy.
Carlos Edwards said he was sitting in his garage with his wife when he saw Wood pull up to the girl in his pickup truck and grab her. He called police and provided authorities with the license plate number.

Carlos Edwards said he was sitting in his garage with his wife when he saw Wood pull up to the girl in his pickup truck and grab her. He called police and provided authorities with the license plate number.

Woods is charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action and child kidnapping. The murder charge is punishable by death or life imprisonment without the possibility of probation or parole, according to the Greene County prosecutor.

Wood, who had little criminal history outside of a 1990 arrest for a controlled substance, was described by police Wednesday night as not speaking with detectives.

The Springfield school district announced Wood's employment suspension Wednesday, pending the police investigation.

"We are fully cooperating with law enforcement officials as their investigation continues," Superintendent Norm Ridder said in a release. "Because this is an ongoing investigation, I will not be making any further comments about the situation at this time."

Hailey was a student at Westport Elementary School this year, after attending Bowerman Elementary School the year before, according to the school district.

Wood's father, Jim Wood of Ash Grove, Mo., told the Kansas City Star that he spoke with his son on Tuesday night, but wouldn't say whether they discussed his arrest.

"The only thing I can tell you is that Craig is my son," Wood told the paper. "I can tell you it is just a tragedy. We're stunned, for everybody who knows him."

The truck was not registered to Woods. They tracked the truck to the owner who said he had loaned it to his friend, Woods. Then they found the truck at Wood's home.

.. five more minutes to get to Wood's house after grilling owner of the van. This should have taken minutes after they got the number from the neighbor. This is gross incompetence at the very least. May have saved a girl's life, but we'll never know now...

According to the Kansas City Star the police were waiting for the suspect at his home when he returned there at 8:30pm. The little girl was already dead inside the house. It would appear that the police did as much as they could to find this girl. Who is stupid now?

...hours and hours when it could have been minutes. Stupid has nothing to do with it. Timing does. She very well may have already been dead but the facts it took as long as they made it doesn't even sound right...

No one knows that the girl was already dead inside the house when the cops came to talk to him. And why did the neighbors not report hearing a gun shot?

The cops found him in his driveway and went for a search warrant. Mr. Woods was not allowed to re-enter his home at that point so we can logically assume that Hailey was already dead inside.

I'll disagree with you Glen. Once they arrived at the home they could have easily articulated to a judge that imminent/immediate entry was necessary to make the attempt to determine whether the victim was in the house and the hope of saving her life should she still be alive. I in no way can not see a judge not signing this search warrant.
Under Exigent circumstances,

probable cause along with exigent circumstances may justify a search or entry without a warrant. This is also known as the “emergency doctrine.” Article 14.05 of the Code of Criminal Procedure also includes a provision that authorizes officers to enter homes without a warrant with exigent circumstances. Exigent circumstances cases typically involve:
• protection of life (first aid; extracting children who appear in danger; protecting an undercover officer or informer; or making a protective sweep);
• protection of property (such as extinguishing a fire or stopping a burglary);
• preventing destruction of evidence;6and
• pursuing a fleeing felon (“hot pursuit”).

Remember that exigent circumstances may justify the initial entry in the house, but because the purpose of the exception is to aid someone in distress or to secure safety, once the crisis is contained, further searching is not permitted. A warrant or another exception may authorize continued searching of the premises, however, and officers can secure the scene for the time it takes to get a warrant. The exigent circumstances doctrine also does not include a general murder scene exception that would authorize unlimited search of the premises, although officers may enter a home to provide immediate aid or to search for other victims or a killer.

Because the exigent circumstances exception is typically applied in cases where officers need to make a warrantless entry rather than a warrantless stop or detention, the exigent circumstances exception typically will not be relevant in a traffic stop. It may become relevant, however, if a driver flees police, abandons his vehicle, and runs into a house or building.
Protection of life

Four circumstances must be present when officers enter a home, without consent or warrant, to search under these circumstances:
• the offender might escape if police do not make an immediate entry;
• the offender has demonstrated that he poses a danger to the community (for instance, the crime just committed is a crime of violence);
• the offender has been pursued into the house continuously from the crime scene; and
• the warrantless arrest would be lawful if accomplished in a public place but that cannot be done because of the suspect’s decision to retreat into a private place.

In Warden v. Hayden, the Supreme Court held the entry into a house by officers in pursuit of an armed robber was justified because any delay to secure a warrant would place the lives of others in danger. The information must be fairly specific, however; merely investigating a potential danger may not justify warrantless entry.

Information about someone the defendant has harmed may be sufficient to justify entry into the place where officers reasonably believe the victim to be. Search of a person police find unconscious is reasonable and necessary for purposes of identification and possible discovery of relevant medical information.
Exige*nt circumstances may allow officers to improve their ability to view inside the defendant’s residence, for instance, by placing a ladder against the building.

Would you like to take back that illegitimate criticism of the police department, now?

Please don't make this about race. Carlos Edwards is a decent, caring and brave MAN. He put himself in harms way without concern for his own safety. His only thought was to save a little girl. This is what makes him such an incredible and heroic MAN! May he be blessed for the rest of his life.

He's 45 and that's is late in life to be starting this behavior. I will be shocked if the little girl was not molested. That will come out in an autopsy. These guys don't start this behavior at 45.....statistics show that the "average" pedophile abuses over 100 children in their lifetime.

Time line seems off and doesn't bode well for the local police. She was witnessed at 4:50 being abducted with a recorded plate number and nobody locates the car for another few hours? You find the car at the guys house and yet it still takes another few hours to get a search warrant? I highly suspect that this girl could have been recovered safely.

I agree, If I see something like this forget calling the cops. I'd chase them myself. Reported with a plate number at 4:50 pm and not located until 2:30 am - nearly 10 hours later! If that plate is registered to that address the cops will have a lot of explaining to do.

Other articles said that the truck was not Wood's. It was registered to another person who he loaned it to Wood, and gave the police Wood's address, where they found the truck in the driveway, with no Hailey in it. They then went for the search warrant for Wood's home, where did find this poor little girl. I would bet that she had been raped and killed within one hour of her abduction, but I will wait to hear the autopsy report.

The parents announced to the local media that their daughter had been found sometime before midnight.. The local police department didn't confirm until the early hours. I just wish that the cops hadn't waited around for a warrant. But my guess is the little girl was probably dead not too long after the kidnapping.

Perpetrators like Craig Wood seldom leave their victim alive to identify them. I wonder if Hailey Owens was even his first victim. Thank goodness Mr. and Mrs. Edwards witnessed the abduction and noted the truck's license plate numbers. Otherwise, CW might have been at large a lot longer.
