If there is a thread (and i'm sure there is but i couldnt find it) on starting your own website?

discussions on ads on a website.

security.

breaking up a website into multiple sections. (say news/info, calander/events, forum, etc)

remote maintenance and posting from mobile devices.

common mistakes to not make.

etc etc etc..

i'm sure its been covered but a quick search and find lead me to a lot of dead ends.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

If you aren't fimiliar with HTML/HTML5 or are not willing to pay a web designer or web hoster the money to get it started.

Try CMS:

There are several but the most successful or popular is Joomla.

After a few youtube tutorial videos and a slight learning curve you'll
be ready to input, upload and launch.

Godaddy or Hostgator are best and most reliable for self serve hosting
and Joomla is easy breezy 1,2, 3ee.

If you need someone to do it for you for a small fee hit me up PM.

I can keep your costs down and give you quality services but if you want a free alternative try FACEBOOK business page.

i would recomend wordpress if you are going the CMS route.
i know a ton of people who have attempted Joomla and then months - 2 years later finally went to wordpress and then were like I should have listened. Joomla can do as much if not more but the learning curve is HELL even for experienced designers. its a thought process thing.

just my penny and half

if you are just looking to get a site up and do most of it yourself I will ask my guys of this service we used to use

Thanks for the info.

I'll look up cms, out of curiosity what are the other options besides cms?

I'll give all a go with with my co workers, we have some ideas we want to put out.

if we get overwhelmed i'll definitely reach out for assistance but we'd like to try as much as we can on our own first.

Keep the info coming. any recommended tutorial sites, youtube links, ebooks etc?

Wordpress would be the best way to go. I agree.

Again why Wordpress over Joomla?

The biggest thing is that wordpress has way more templates then Joomla. Which allows you to have a larger variation choice when designing your site.

CMS using wordpress effectively will be easier to update and remove content without having to alter code! Which you would need to do if you have a site built in HTML/CSS.

It can also easily be used for your online marketing campaigns with tons of plugins for social networks, E-Commerce, SEO, Data tracking, ETC ETC ETC which you will need to effectively reach customers all over the world.

If you need help I can offer the service as well PM ME with your exact goals, even if it's for more information on how to do this yourself I don't mind helping.

wordpress it is then. i have my project for the weekend. are there any software packages i can download that keeps all the tools, community generated templates etc for download?

Check for plugins in the admin section you will usually find what you are looking for there.

Great advice, I am working on my sites using Joomla, and Go daddy. Let's not forget about Dropbox for large files and sharing...
