I don't eat at KFC nor would I do that to my chicken. That said, it's not unusual. I had Filipina girl who was a good cook tell me years ago she marinades meat in soda and soy sauce.
The chicken is old school on the cooking shows.... seen basically the same shit done on them..... but I got the sugar sooooo......but the potato wedges I gotte try

I've seen chefs do that soda shit with beef and chicken on some of those BBQ cooking shows that's why I said it's old school..... I was shocked to see ground coffee used as a rub tho

It's definitely old school and pretty widespread. They do that in Latin America and Asia. I imagine it caramelizes pretty good.
I've marinated ribs and beef in soda before smoking it like at least 8-9 years ago....But I never cooked it in a pan like that

when she poured all that shit over them, they weren't done..... only fast fried on both sides..... she covered them and cooked for twenty more minutes to cook them through man.... you cook that way so that you get that crispy exterior without over cooking man... technique man.... technique
Mexicans do it all the time using fruit & citrus juice..
