Drug smugglers who tried to bring more than a tonne of marijuana across international borders have been collared - after they stuffed it inside FAKE CARROTS.
The two pick-up trucks were loaded with the pretend vegetables in Mexico and taken to the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge - the US-Mexico Border - on Sunday, according to US Customs and Border Protection.
The truck was scanned by security cameras and then specialist dogs were brought out to sniff the cargo. A search uncovered 2,817 packages of marijuana, wrapped into carrot shapes with orange plastic, in amongst the real roots.
Port Director Efrain Solis Jr told the New York Daily News : "Once again, drug smuggling organizations have demonstrated their creativity in attempting to smuggle large quantities of narcotics across the US/Mexico border.
"Our officers are always ready to meet those challenges and remain vigilant towards any type of illicit activities."
Authorities say they recovered 1,130kg with a value of more than £346,000.
The practice of smuggling drugs as foodstuff seems to be the new trend, as police stopped drug dealers from bringing in £1.17 million worth of narcotics, were disguised as cucumbers and carrots on December 2 last year - at the same bridge.
