Getting caught speeding in Virginia might soon come with a tech twist. Judges could soon order certain drivers to install devices that cap how fast their cars can go. The measure gives reckless drivers a way to stay on the road without losing their license. It’s part of Virginia’s push to make highways safer and hold heavy-footed motorists more accountable.

Virginia Becomes First State to Mandate Speed-Limiting Devices

Virginia’s taking a bold step in road safety. Judges will soon have the power to order certain drivers to install speed-limiting devices in their cars. The rule targets reckless drivers and offers a way to stay on the road without losing a license. The device keeps cars within posted limits using GPS or camera systems. It’s a fair trade for safer roads, so drivers can keep moving without pushing their luck or their speed.

Judges Gain Power to Order Installation

Judges in Virginia will soon have more say in how drivers face speeding violations. Instead of taking away a license, they can order a speed-limiting device to be installed in the driver’s car. The setup tracks road limits and adjusts speed automatically. It gives drivers a second chance to stay on the road, so they can still work and get around safely without putting others at risk or landing behind bars.

Advocacy Groups Push for Tougher Standards

Advocacy groups in Virginia have been urging lawmakers to take a harder stance on speeding. Some wanted the speed-limiting requirement to apply automatically to anyone caught driving over 100 miles per hour. The idea was to make penalties consistent and discourage reckless habits. Lawmakers listened, so drivers who push their limits might now face smarter consequences that still let them stay mobile but keep everyone safer on the road.

Governor Youngkin Leaves Decision to the Courts

Governor Glenn Youngkin chose to let judges decide when drivers must install speed limiters instead of applying the rule to everyone caught going over 100 miles per hour. His approach gives courts flexibility to match the penalty with each situation. It also helps balance fairness with safety, so drivers who make mistakes can face the consequences without automatically losing their ability to get around or keep their daily routines.

How Speed-Limiting Technology Works

Speed-limiting devices use GPS or a car’s built-in camera system to read traffic signs and match speeds to posted limits. The system adjusts automatically as the driver moves through different areas, so it stays accurate wherever they go. It’s designed to stop drivers from pushing past the limit without cutting their freedom to drive. The setup makes driving smoother and safer for everyone sharing the same stretch of road.

Drivers Must Pay for Installation Costs

Drivers ordered to install a speed limiter will need to cover the cost themselves. The amount depends on the setup and how long it stays in place, which could range from two to six months. Judges decide the duration based on the offense. It’s a short-term fix that lets drivers keep using their vehicles without harsher penalties. So, instead of paying hefty fines or losing their license, they pay for a system that helps them stay within limits.

Penalties for Tampering or Avoiding the Device

Drivers who try to cheat the system could face serious trouble. Tampering with a speed limiter or driving another car to get around it is a misdemeanor. The penalty can reach up to a year in jail, so the law makes sure drivers take it seriously. It’s a fair warning that following the rules is easier than risking a bigger problem later, especially when the goal is safer roads for everyone.

Other States Consider Similar Legislation

Virginia might be leading the way, but other states are already paying attention. The District of Columbia passed a similar rule last year, and Maryland is looking into one too. Lawmakers in nearby regions are watching how Virginia’s program works before taking the next step. So, what starts in one state could soon spread, setting a new standard for how communities handle drivers who keep pushing past the speed limit.

What Drivers Can Expect Next

Virginia’s move could spark a shift in how states handle speeding. Drivers may start seeing more courts offer these devices as an option instead of harsher penalties. It’s a change that keeps people on the road but holds them accountable at the same time. So, anyone with a heavy foot might want to ease up, because the future of driving in Virginia could soon have a speed cap built right in.

They'll be making teen drivers/drivers with permits required to use them next until they become experienced, turn 21... maybe insurance companies will offer cheaper insurance, even for adukt drivers as well as teens if thry use one

Wild!! What if you need to speed up to avoid an obstacle?!

Feels more unsafe than safe.

Just suspend people's driving privileges if they can't follow the rules after being caught a number of times being reckless!!!

Like I said above, they'll be offering cheaper insuranmce for those just learning, until they're 21 as well as adults... the devices they got now are just more sophisticated version of a governer because they're able to read signs

Damn, just imagine someone having a Lambo or a Charger with one of those, it's like spending all that money on an AK-47 that can only shoot BBs.

If you got a Lambo and are driving like an ass.... oh well.... no state has a wide open speed limit.... they would have to take their Lambo or Charger to Germany and air them out on the Autobahn

People will find a way around that goofy shit.
If it's "digital" it can be hacked

Like I said, just suspend folks.

Virginia is one of the states I have no interest in ever visiting or driving through.

Every fucking road, street, or boulevard is named after some confederate traitor loser. They had public buildings the same until they were made to rename them. The capital was the capital of the confederacy. You'd think after you got your ass handed to you, you'd want to reset somewhere else.

As for these devices, I'd need to see more detail but trust me, there are more times when you need to speed up than slow down on the highway.

Wait.

The limit is 100 miles an hour.

ONE HUNDRED. MILES. AN HOUR.

We really need to be mad at that???
