The NJ Transit bus driver charged with shooting a 15-year-old Saturday in Jersey City pulled the gun and fired after getting stomped by a group of teens, a video of the incident showed.
The 9-second video has been posted in multiple social media platforms, with the hashtag #freethebusdriver. The driver, 48-year-old Charles Fieros, has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a handgun, two other weapons charges and receiving stolen property.
Details of what sparked the assault and the ensuing gunfire at Monticello and Jewett avenues, have not been released by authorities.
The 15-year-old was shot three times and suffered serious injuries, authorities have said. The others involved in the assault, who are seen fleeing when Fieros pulls a gun out of his waistband, were not struck. Fieros was taken to a local hospital to be treated.
The video shows a handful of teens kicking the bus driver next to the double-parked bus as a girl is heard begging them to stop.
Public Safety Director James Shea told News12 Tuesday that six teens were involved in the assault and police would be presenting the evidence to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office to see if charges can be filed.
Fieros was identified by a witness and he was found to be in possession of a 9mm Glock handgun along with the high capacity magazines when he was later arrested, according to the criminal complaint. Police later learned that the weapon was reported stolen in Norfolk, Virginia, the complaint said.
