Using the Yellow Sticky Pads for Your Brainstorming Session
I’m rewriting the content for the new projects for Dream and Hustle so please check out the Projects section to see updates. The next several articles will focus on our progress on the current projects which is the UDM scene, the crowdfunded discounting application and the positive branding effort for the sistas. In this article, let’s talk about the brainstorming session with the yellow sticky pads and how I did it in my innovation lab.
I wrote an article already on this topic at the following URL for reference: http://dreamandhustle.com/2013/05/r...p-your-sanity-trying-to-live-work-and-hustle/
Preparation
Because I’m working on three projects, I laid out a sticky pad with the name of the project on the table. For each project, I’m going to brainstorm every thought in my head for 20 minutes you should notice I have a 20 minute timer. So what I’m going to do is basically start the timer for each project and start brainstorming until time run out. After time run out, I’m taking every note I posted up and put it in a pile underneath the project titled sticky pad.
Post to the Wall
For the next 20 minutes, I wrote down whatever I can think about on the topic and posted it to the wall. I do not have a chair in my innovation lab so I just pace around and keep thinking and also, I’m contained in my innovation lab for 20 minutes and do not leave and have to keep thinking of all the possibilities. It is tough but what happens is I think of one thing and quickly be able to move on that subject.
I actually had some great ideas generated. For example, the crowdfunded discount will alert the merchant if the person redeeming the coupons was an investor so they can thank them personally if they want to. Nothing is off-limits and there are things that even if they sound the same, I post it up on the wall to keep it moving. I can tell you from the stuff I’m posting, the urban dance music is more about distribution and revenue while the sista branding will be about creating the framework for positive growth of sistas and the crowdfunded discount will probably be international and transcend the Black community purpose down the road.
Pile it Up
After the 20 minute timer goes off, to be honest I had enough time to dump everything I think I know on the topic and what is needed. I take all of the sticky notes, pile them up and put them underneath each project section. So that was it, 3 projects at 20 minutes of brainstorming means I had 1 hour of a brainstorming session and that is what I did with my extra hour from the daylight savings time change.
Next Step
The next step is to take this pile of sticky notes and create a mind map of the concepts that I have on each sticky note. This is where the concept will see the first structured organization and that will be the next follow up on this article. I will be posting exactly what I wrote on the sticky notes in the project section and look forward to your feedback and input.
