The fence makes for an interesting question, should countries be selective in who they allow in and, what criteria should be used to admit/deny entry ???
MCP, I'm sure you have probably noted Black Americans tend to have mixed views regarding immigration from Mexico and points south as well as immigration from the so-called Muslim World.
But, what are your thoughts on the European model? That is, parts of Europe, especially Great Britain, has rather freely admitted people with different socio-religous backgrounds, i.e., Pakistanis, etc. My reading suggests to me that the Germans have been . . . well, shall we say, less accepting. From your perspective, how is the European Melting Pot working out? Are there dangers??? What borders are there, between people ???
Assuming that you are a Britain of African descent, (pardon me if I am wrong; and I mean no disrespect either way), I am really interested in hearing directly how the "average" (using that term loosely) Britain of African descent views immigration from the Muslim world ???
Good question QueEx,
Yes over the past few months I've seen the various thread and issues raised here on BGOL in regards to immigration.
From a British perspective, I must say that yes I'm British born and bred, also with a Caribbean ancestry.
Before I answer that question I would like to give you a bit of a historical background of immigration in the UK in general. If there are any others on this board from the UK who wishes to add, please feel free to comment.
Most people who came to the UK were 'invited' over by the British government in the early 1950s and 1960s to work due to a manpower shortage. They came mainly from the 'Commonwealth' (or what some may say the colonies under the earlier British empire). They mainly came from the Caribbean, Africa and the Asian continent.
Prior to this there were people from all over the world who were living and working in Britain going as far back as the 1700s.
In regards now to your question, yes in Britain today there is a large melting pot of people from all over the world who have come to Britain to try and achieve an better economic way of life for their families. As a black person living in the UK right now. Most black people in my opinion don't mind people coming into the country to live and trying to better themselves economically.
Most right wing media would like you to think that new immigrants are just living off from state benefits and not doing anything at all. When in fact the statistical and factual information clearly states otherwise.
Most people from their respected communities generally like to live near to each other. Its not as much segregated like such in the US. You can walk through any neighbourhood in relative safety and not be harmed because of who you are. In general we live side by side in relative harmony. I have Irish and Ethiopian neighbours living either side of me and we all get along just fine.
Yes you're right. Immigration is more tolerant in the UK, say than Germany, where I have heard first hand accounts of the racism that goes on over there.
To your question, Muslims are not just from one country. They are from Africa, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia etc. I hope this answers your question, feel free to ask any more questions if I've missed out anyway you may wanted to know.
