WASHINGTON, DC - AUGUST 21: Attorney General Eric Holder makes a separated statement on the unrest after the unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, during a major financial fraud announcement press conference August 21, 2014 at the Justice Department in Washington, DC. Holder spoke on the current situation in Ferguson one day after his visit to the town and met with Browns family, saying the investigation of the shooting will be thorough and will be fair, and Department of Justice stands with the people of Ferguson. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is reportedly stepping down.

Holder, the country's first African-American AG, will make the announcement Thursday, NPR is reporting, after five and a half years in the role.

The 63-year-old will remain with the Justice Department until his successor is named, but has been "adamant" about his departure, a source told NPR. The final decision was reportedly Holder's to make, the Obama administration wanted him to stay on the full eight years.

Holder is leery about remaining much longer over fears he "could be locked in to stay for much of the rest of President Obama's second term," according to the source.

The final decision was agreed to by Holder and Obama over Labor Day weekend, sources told NPR.

Possible successors include former White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler and Solicitor General Donald Verrilli, according to the Wall Street Journal. Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara's name has also been mentioned in reports.

Holder is the 82nd AG and was one of President Obama's earliest appointees after working as the deputy attorney general under President Bill Clinton in the 1990s.

His tumultuous tenure, the fourth-longest in history, has been marked by political infighting and racial divides across the nation, which culminated with the Michael Brown shooting last month in Ferguson, Missouri.

The AG was dispatched directly to the St. Louis suburb to handle he inquiry into the unarmed black teen's death at the hands of white police officer Darren Wilson.

He also notably called America "a nation of cowards" during a 2009 speech for Black History Month. A line meant to address racial tensions that instead became a lightning rod for criticism.

Holder also surprisingly decided to bring 9/11 suspects to trial in a downtown Manhattan court.

He later reversed course amid intense criticism from federal, state and local politicians and city residents and sent the trials to a military court.

Not all was bad, though, as many civil rights advances also occurred during his time in office.

The Justice Department refused to help enable laws that would restrict gay couple's right to marry and relaxed prosecution of low-level drug offenses that many argue are targeted at minorities

Holder also went after states with voter registration laws on grounds they were targeted at restricting minorities' right to vote.

It is not known where the New York native plans to go after his time at the Justice Department ends.

Loretta Lynch, Federal Prosecutor, Is Called
a Leading Candidate for Attorney General

WASHINGTON — Loretta E. Lynch, the top federal prosecutor in Brooklyn, has emerged as a leading contender to be the next attorney general, officials close to the process said, as President Obama looks outside his inner circle to fill a crucial post.

The White House declined to comment on whether Mr. Obama would tap Ms. Lynch, who if chosen and confirmed would be the first African-American woman to serve as the nation’s top law enforcement official. She would replace Eric H. Holder Jr., who is stepping down

Breitbart Criticizes Wrong Loretta Lynch

In a now-removed article criticizing Loretta Lynch, President Obama's nominee for attorney general, conservative news site Breitbart achieved two remarkable feats: it attacked the wrong Lynch, and issued one of the best correction notices of all time.

Breitbart alleged that Loretta Lynch, the New York federal prosecutor Obama has nominated, was a part of the defense team for former President Bill Clinton during the 1992 Whitewater scandal. She wasn't.

Breitbart cited a 1992 New York Times article that "reported that Lynch was one of the Clintons' Whitewater defense attorneys as well as a 'campaign aide.'" But the Loretta Lynch in the 1992 Times article is a California-based attorney and former California Public Utilities Commissioner, and not Obama's attorney general nominee, as Media Matters points out.

The Lynch nominated for attorney general never worked for the Clinton campaign. During the Clinton administration, Lynch served as the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, and went on to become Brooklyn's top federal prosecutor, as HuffPost's Ryan Reilly reported.

Obama announced Lynch as his pick to head the Department of Justice on Saturday, saying of her, "It’s pretty hard to be more qualified for this job than Loretta." If confirmed by the Senate, Lynch would be the first black woman in the job and would follow the first black attorney general.

Breitbart updated the Whitewater story along with another that also referred to the wrong Lynch, Talking Points Memo notes. The Whitewater article was taken down late Sunday night.

But before the article alleging "Obama's Attorney General Nominee Loretta Lynch Represented Clintons During Whitewater" was removed, it was given a correction notice, placed at the bottom. Here it is, in all its splendor:

Correction: The Loretta Lynch identified earlier as the Whitewater attorney was, in fact, a different attorney.

The Right Is Lining Up Its Anti-Loretta Lynch Talking Points

Want to know how the GOP is going to prevent Loretta Lynch's confirmation if Harry Reid can't get her confirmed in the lame-duck session?

Want to know how the GOP is going to prevent Loretta Lynch's confirmation if Harry Reid can't get her confirmed in the lame-duck session? This is the first line of attack:
Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Mike Lee (R-UT) said Saturday that President Barack Obama's nomination to replace Attorney General Eric Holder, Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch, must denounce Obama's planned executive amnesty.

"President Obama's Attorney General nominee deserves fair and full consideration of the United States Senate, which is precisely why she should not be confirmed in the lame duck session of Congress by senators who just lost their seats and are no longer accountable to the voters," Cruz and Lee said in a joint statement. "The Attorney General is the President's chief law enforcement officer. As such, the nominee must demonstrate full and complete commitment to the law. Loretta Lynch deserves the opportunity to demonstrate those qualities, beginning with a statement whether or not she believes the President’s executive amnesty plans are constitutional and legal."
Oh, but that's just Cruz and Lee, right? Two bomb-throwers? Hasn't the mainstream media told us repeatedly that this was the election in which the reasonable, responsible GOP establishment crushed the crazies?

Well, here's the same line from a guy who's considered one of the "respectable" members of the right-wing media:

<iframe title="Embedded Tweet" style="display: block; max-width: 99%; min-width: 220px; padding: 0px; border-radius: 5px; margin: 10px 0px; border-width: 1px; border-style: solid; border-color: rgb(238, 238, 238) rgb(221, 221, 221) rgb(187, 187, 187); -moz-border-top-colors: none; -moz-border-right-colors: none; -moz-border-bottom-colors: none; -moz-border-left-colors: none; border-image: none; box-shadow: 0px 1px 3px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.15); position: static; visibility: visible; width: 500px;" allowfullscreen="" class="twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered" allowtransparency="true" scrolling="no" id="twitter-widget-0" frameborder="0" height="211"></iframe>
Oh, and last month, before the Lynch pick was announced, Roll Call's Humberto Sanchez compiled a list of ten questions the nominee "will likly hear." This was #1:
1. What is the limit of the president's executive authority on immigration?

The nominee will face questions from senators either just before -- or just after -- the president announces sweeping executive action to expand deportation relief to illegal immigrants, a move sure to enrage the GOP.
Many Republicans say the president can not act without Congress, which, under Article I of the Constitution, has authority over immigration. The House has already voted to end the president's existing program known as DACA deferring deportations for young immigrants brought here illegally.

Expect Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, both members of the Judiciary Committee, to lead the questioning on this front.
This week, Republicans paid no price at the polls for blocking immigration reform after the 2012 election. So, yes, I think they're going after her for this -- they may stand back and let Cruz and Sessions lead the way, but unless Lynch denounces the man who appointed her, they're going to raise holy hell. Even ostensibly pro-reform senators such as Graham, McCain, and Rubio are going to say that they support an overhaul of the law but not "lawlessness."

They'll block her. Bet on it.<iframe style="display: none;" allowtransparency="true" scrolling="no" id="rufous-sandbox" frameborder="0"></iframe>

Now the visual. A bunch of rich white racist Republicans downgrading a highly qualified and educated black Federal Prosecutor. Bring it on bitches. Clever move by President Obama.:yes:
