Universal Mulling Def Jam Records Biopic Following Success Of ‘Compton’

https://deadline.com/2015/09/russell-simmons-biopic-michael-b-jordan-1201528783/

Following the huge critical and financial success of the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton, we’re hearing that Universal is considering another high profile deep dive into hip hop history, this time the story of Def Jam Recordings and its co-founder Russell Simmons. We’re also hearing Michael B. Jordan and Jonah Hill mentioned as possibles for Simmons and Def Jam co-founder Rick Rubin respectively, though there are no deals in place at this time.

The film would be based on 2002’s Life and Def: Sex, Drugs, Money, + God, co-written by Simmons and Nelson George, which chronicles Simmons’ career, particularly the creation (with Rubin) of the legendary hip hop label that defined rap in the 80s. We’re told it would focus on the early years of Def Jam, and how hip hop grew from an underground sensation into a dominant and pivotal voice of culture and change.

Things are still very preliminary, but time is certainly ripe for the project. Not only looking at Compton, Fox’s Empire and the Broadway hit Hamilton demonstrate handily that there’s heavy interest in rap and the rap music business.

Simmons got his start on practically the ground floor of the rap game, managing Kurtis Blow early on, and soon after, being instrumental in the rise and incredible success of his brother Joseph’s group Run-DMC. In 1984 Simmons and Rubin launched Def Jam in Rubin’s NYU dorm room, going on to foster the careers of some of the most successful rap artists of all time, among them LL Cool J, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, EPMD, Warren G and Nate Dogg, and Jay-Z. A fictionalized version of the label was the subject of the cult 1985 film Krush Groove.

truth be told this was 1 of the few that made since

prepare for the straight b movie from dipset

and wait for roc-a-fella where jay z will be hyped up like he was nicky barnes of brooklyn..the person who will play dame dash will steal the show cause the epitome of asshole will be displayed

are u trying to sell tix or make a youtube movie..rap a lot would be a who cares of record label movies

You could sell that movie. If you can sell Tyler Perry or a Rich and Alpo movie or a State Property movie you can sell a movie about a Texas record label.

illest scenes in hip hop history. plus all the stories are out there already via interviews

yep true.

but to be fair a rap a lot movie or specifically a j prince movie would havb a lot more action than most hip hop stories combined. even have presidents involved.:lol:

shit there are 2 movies i wanna see a master p and j prince.

You are kidding yourself if you think a biopic movie about Public Enemy won't make a shitload of money at the box office.

C'mon son.

Do not forget....

White folks have inducted PE into the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame.... right alongside acts like the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Bob Marley, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, etc., etc.

So Public Enemy is at the very top of the hip-hop 'Mt. Rushmore of Respect'.

See, white folks will show up IN DROVES to support their favorite music 'legends'. Especially their 'Hall of Famers'. (Regardless of their age.)

Oh yes.. a Public Enemy biopic WOULD be a giant blockbuster, just like Straight Outta Compton, or probably even bigger... with or without any support from the types of black hip-hop fans who wish emcees would stop rapping once they reach 40 years old.

The problem that I may have is that this may start a trend of black xploitation movies. Meaning non blacks behind the scenes producing/directing movies of a movement started black people for white audience and profit.

At least, Cube and folks had a hand in Straight Outta Compton.

everyone is seeing dollar signs

all them damn movies gone suck....they gone rush movies out trying to cash in

ima pass
