Job seekers finally seem to be getting a break.

The number of jobs on American payrolls rocketed past economists’ expectations in January, posting its biggest gain in nine months and helping the unemployment rate post a surprise drop to its lowest level in about three years.

The Labor Department reported that payrolls rose by 243,000, and the jobless rate dropped to 8.3%, a level unseen since February 2009.

“It’s unambiguously good news,” John Ryding, chief economist at RDQ Economics told the Daily News. “It’s another piece of evidence that the economy was growing faster in the end of 2011 and beginning of 2012 than it was for much of last year, and the trend is continuing.”

Economists had expected payrolls to rise just 150,000 as a boost from temporary holiday hiring in the prior month faded, with unemployment remaining steady at 8.5%.

Revisions to November and December added an additional 60,000 jobs.

Recent data has indicated the economy is growing – if tentatively.

Earlier this week, the government reported that Americans’ income rose by the most in nine months in December, although spending was flat.

Hiring and wage gains are needed to spur consumer spending, which powers more than two-thirds of U.S. economic growth.

The economy picked up steam in the final three months of 2011, although some economists expect it to slow early this year.

GOP rips January jobs report showing unemployment rate dipped to 8.3%: More can be done

Obama’s team praised the U.S. economy for adding 243,000 new jobs in January

image.jpg

Even a shockingly strong jobs report that smashed analysts' expectations isn't enough for some Republicans.

Friday's Department of Labor report showed that 243,000 jobs were added last month, and that the unemployment rate dropped from 8.5% in December to 8.3% in January — the lowest level in almost three years. Still, GOP leaders were critical.

"We must do better," House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said in a statement on Friday morning, adding that while the numbers were "welcome news," the unemployment rate is still "far too high."

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said the government "shouldn't settle," giving President Obama the backhanded compliment that he was "finally" beginning to acknowledge GOP initiatives.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney tweeted, “While we welcome a decline in unemployment, these numbers can't hide the fact that the President's policies have prevented a true recovery."

“These numbers will go up and down in the coming months,” President Obama said from Fire Station No. 5 in Arlington, Va. where he outlined a new plan to put veterans back to work. “There are still far too many Americans who needs jobs…but the economy is growing stronger, the recovery is speeding up.”

Bill Burton, former White House spokesman and strategist for a pro-Obama super PAC tweeted, "Somewhere on the campaign trail, Mitt Romney is depressed that more employers didn't take part in the joy of firing people last month."

Several analysts say the numbers are good news for Obama, whose re-election chances largely hinge on an improved economy, especially in hard-hit states like Florida, Michigan and Nevada, where unemployment rates remain high.

But history says Obama may not be out of the woods yet.

No modern president since Franklin Roosevelt has won re-election with an unemployment rate higher than 7.2% on Election Day.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The unemployment rate fell for the fifth straight month after a surge of January hiring, a promising shift in the nation's outlook for job growth.

The Labor Department says employers added 243,000 jobs in January, the most in nine months. The unemployment rate dropped to 8.3 percent from 8.5 percent in December. That's the lowest in nearly three years.

African-American unemployment fell significantly for the first time in three months, going from 15.8 to 13.6 percent. Black teen joblessness also went down from 42.1 to 38.5 percent.

Employers have added an average of 201,000 jobs per month in the past three months. That's 50,000 more jobs per month than the economy averaged in each month last year.

The January jobs report was filled with other encouraging data and revisions. Hiring was widespread across many high-paying industries. Pay increased. And the economy added 200,000 more jobs in 2011 than first thought.

Auto sector grows in January, adding 15,000 jobs

By David Shepardson Detroit News Washington Bureau 1 Comments

Las Vegas- Automakers and dealers added more than 15,000 jobs in January as the auto sector continues to gain strength.

Auto manufacturers and the parts sector added 7,900 jobs in January. Overall, the U.S. economy added 50,000 new manufacturing jobs in January.

Auto dealers — new and used — added 7,400 jobs in January, as dealership employment was up 41,000 jobs to 1.08 million over the last year.

Over the last the year, the auto vehicle/parts sector added 44,000 jobs over last year to 746,300, up from 702,400, according to seasonally adjusted figures.

President Barack Obama has touted the rebound of the U.S. auto sector, which has helped lead the economic turnaround.

Overall, the U.S. economy gained 243,000 jobs and the unemployment rate decreased to 8.3 percent in January — its lowest rate in three years.

"Today's jobs report is good news for the American economy, driven by the addition of 50,000 manufacturing jobs, with 8,000 of them in motor vehicles and parts. This report demonstrates that cleaner cars are helping to drive our economic recovery and put Americans back to work," said BlueGreen Alliance executive director David Foster, a coalition of 12 environmental groups and labor unions, including the United Auto Workers union.

But the auto sector is down sharply from recent years. In January 2006, automakers and parts producers employed nearly 1.1 million people in the United States and auto dealers employed 1.24 million workers.

Overall in 2006, the U.S. employed 14 million people in manufacturing. Today it's 11.9 million, up 235,000 jobs over the last year.

Automakers have closed dozens of factories, shuttered brands and closed thousands of dealerships over the last decade.

Re: Unemployment report: 243,000 jobs added, jobless rate falls to 8.3% - lowest in t

50,000 New Manufacturing Jobs, GM is #1, Gas Use @ 2001 Levels, Thank You President Obama

The reports of the death of American manufacturing were premature. President Obama stopped the long hard decline in U.S. manufacturing that began under President G.W. Bush. U.S. durable goods manufacturing added 50,000 jobs in January for a total of 418,000 jobs over the past 2 years. Hours worked in manufacturing were up 4.2 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011, giving a boost to worker pay. President Obama's decision to save GM and Chrysler, which was strongly attacked at the time by Republicans, saved America's manufacturing sector leading to today's good news. If GM had been allowed to shut down the ripple effect through the supply chain would have permanently damaged a large sector of American manufacturing. Today GM is the worlds number 1 producer of automobiles and Chrysler, which Republicans declared dead, is profitable again.

Auto sales were so strong that auto dealers added 7,000 new jobs in January.
In the goods-producing sector, manufacturing added 50,000 jobs. Nearly all of the increase occurred in durable goods manufacturing, with job growth in fabricated metal products (+11,000), machinery (+11,000), and motor vehicles and parts (+8,000). Durable goods manufacturing has added 418,000 jobs over the past 2 years.

The really good news that hasn't been reported with the auto jobs data is the large reduction in U.S. gasoline consumption. In January, gas consumption plummeted to levels not seen since the weeks after September 11, 2001. This is solid evidence that the Obama administration's bold initiative to turn GM into a producer of smaller fuel efficient cars is a resounding success. Clearly, the high price of gas has encouraged use of mass transit, car pools and more efficient trips, but no one can blame cold winter weather for the low gas consumption. Obviously, buyers are replacing old inefficient vehicles with new fuel efficient ones. Because people put off auto buying during the recession, pent up demand will continue this trend of replacing gas guzzlers with gas sippers. This isn't just good news for the environment. It's good for the economy. The U.S. economy will be less prone to go into a recession as oil prices rise because consumers who are using less fuel will be less sensitive to price hikes.

Total U.S. fuel consumption dropped to 1999 levels, putting strong downward pressure on the price of "West Texas" crude sold at Cushing, Oklahoma. The price of Brent crude, which is of similar high quality, was $16.74 higher at close of business today than West Texas Intermediate. President Obama's success in raising vehicle fuel economy standards will help further reduce consumption and will help keep gas prices from rising more.
Rising Cushing inventories also helped widen Brent’s premium over WTI, which has almost doubled this year, said Gene McGillian, an analyst and broker at Tradition Energy in Stamford, Connecticut. Enterprise Products Partners LP (EPD) plans to start shipping oil from Cushing to the U.S. Gulf Coast June 1 after the Seaway pipeline’s flow is reversed.

“Cushing stocks are increasing and there won’t be new pipelines until later this year,” McGillian said. He added that Asian demand is boosting Brent.

Crude prices may fall next week, a Bloomberg News survey showed. Fourteen of 34 analysts, or 41 percent, forecast oil will drop through Feb. 10. Twelve respondents, or 35 percent, predicted prices will increase and eight estimated there will be little change.

Total petroleum demand in the U.S., the biggest oil consumer, fell to 17.7 million barrels a day last week, the lowest level since May 1999, according to the Energy Department. Gasoline consumption decreased to 7.97 million barrels a day, the lowest level since September 2001.

Strong demand in Asia is driving up the price of Brent crude. Republicans are pressing for the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline so that the Koch Brothers can sell fuel they refined in Texas to Asia and world markets. Completion of additional pipeline capacity is not required to meet falling demand in the U.S. If the pipeline is built West Texas prices will rise to Brent levels.

President Obama is helping keep the price of gas down by not approving the Keystone XL pipeline.

Yeah. The Repugs are sputtering and gnashing their teeth trying to tell people that economic recovery is not happening. Their whole thesis is based on the country being in absolute economic crisis by November. A crisis they have been carefully fermenting since the Inauguration by doing nothing to fix it. In fact, by doing nothing at all. The President told them not to "muck it up". You know he almost slipped and said the "f" word.lol

You use the Detroit News as an authority.

Those assholes didn't see GM's collapse coming in 2008. Yet, we're supposed to believe they know what's happening now.

Detroit has been doing terribly under President Obama.

No jobs, no loans, and high as hell foreclosure rate. It looks like Obama's whole plan is to wipe out all the housing in Detroit, so the whites can grab the city.

You Obama-lovers are getting desperate with all these bullshit news stories from the state-run media.

Let me know when gas prices drop below $3/gallon. Then you can talk about a good President.

You trying to say Detroit is doing well shows you are clueless about what Obama is. Obama has not done a DAMN thing to help Detroit.

Obama can go fuck himself.

One cat posted about what kind of jobs they don't want. No more labor or standing on your feet. Well what are you qualified for ?

Another showed shopping carts outside like that means something. What time of day was that taken ? Maybe the store wasn't filled because people were at work. I went to WalMart the other day and not a cart inside I had to go get my own from the parking lot.

Another said it wasn't enough. Well who said it was enough but what they said is it a bright sign.

If your ass was in below zero weather for a week and then the temp rose to 35 and someone said it is warmer you would say it's still cold.

I may be wrong but I think that number is the cumulative final total counting jobs lost and added. So say 343,000 jobs were added and 100,000 lost. That's where they get the 243,000 from.

Best believe if more jobs were lost than added Repugnicans would have told us about it already.
