Typical streets in Havana, Cuba,

The amount of fucking going on must be off the charts.

Hot Havana nights....summer...in the jazz clubs and hotels...

Would love to visit if relations were better

Was it easier cause you're Canadian?

Not really - most people I crossed paths with thought I was American, as there weren't many tourists around.

Our hotel had a mixture of tourists - mostly American and international.

The airport was interesting. I remember getting in late (close to midnight) when we arrived, and there were LOTS of people just outside the exit door outside awaiting their guests. It was buzzing - almost like a party environment. I had to step aside for a few minutes as it was a bit overwhelming. Took a small bus to the hotel destination thereafter. When we got our ride to the airport a week and a half later, our family friend there drove us in the AM before 6am. He had his own transport / taxi-type business. So he had a couple of really nice late-50s / early-60s cars. That was a cool experience.

@850credit

I was wearing my Dodgers cap the bulk of the time, hence the immediate thought of me being American.

Funniest (and best interaction). Guy asks me where I'm from. I reply Canada and he smiles. He basically started naming a few Canadian provinces asking me which one. I replied from Vancouver, B.C. (just outside of there). He smiled some more and was like - "Downtown Eastside?"

That was the last thing I expected to hear. I work about 10 - 15 mins from there and we both had a good laugh. He added he had some family who lived near downtown Vancouver.

I mean as far as you getting cleared to go there....I heard it's not restricted for Canadiens or something like that.

I think Americans can only go under certain parameters like educational, close family or state business etc and you basically have to be part of an approved tour company last time I looked into it.

Can yall just book a ticket like normal or did you have to get approval with your State Department?

Oh ok, my bad.

Yeah - it was straight-forward re: travel for us Canadians.

You're right re: the parameters for Americans, etc. Thinking back to the dining hall at the hotel (continental breakfast was offered there) ... the majority of the tourists were middle-aged and older. Talked to a few and they were from travel groups.

That's what made getting around on foot interesting. There were times we'd be walking around and only see a handful of tourists over long stretches.

The ramifications of sanctions and embargos on a country for almost 70 years
:smh:

A country with the healthiest Black people and most equally treated Black patients in the Western Hemisphere. Let us never forget when Cuban medical professionals went to Italy and saved their asses when Kong Flu Covid19 was kicking asses and taking names.

Before Obama relaxed the restrictions, i.e. from 1960 to 2008/9, if a US citizen flew to a neutral country, like Canada, Mexico, Bahamas or Mexico, and booked a flight there to Cuba, the Cuban immigration would not stamp the passport. Obama loosened a lot of the restrictions, even having direct flights. The 45th President, re-introduced those restrictions.

So, it's best to just fly to Mexico City or Toronto. It's how the rich Cubans from Florida do it...

Visited Havana for 10 days in May 2014. Got around on foot the whole time. It was like taking a step back in time with all the older model vehicles, architecture, etc. Walked around for several hours each day.
Bruh, they ripped me off at the dollar exchange, then I stepped in dog shit (abundant() and fucked up my all whites. I was eating half chickens with 2 sides for $3-4 USD. I was there the month they shot Fast & the Furious. I watched em kiss white taint. I’m there with $500 USD converted and they acted like I was them. It shook me. Look, for $5 USD you eat GOOD! I was eating full platters at my hotel for $7 USD! I would ear, drink, bill be $9 and I would leave $2o. I probably spent $200 USD that week. I was a tipping fool! Now, fuck em. Fuck em. Fuck em! Let the republicans eat em alive. Fuck em

Damn - you were doing it right with the half chickens & 2 sides.

I didn't care much for the restaurant meals we had. One place was good ... but the others not so much. The continental breakfast at the hotel was great though. They had everything. Lots of selections, so I always made sure to eat good to start the day. Had a good meal at one of the beer gardens by the ocean. That place was really popular with locals.

I wasn't sure about the dollar exchange stuff either. Whether to get some at the airport, at the hotel, or one of the shops. Plus ... our Canadian dollar is garbage. American dollar is worth way more.
