A 28-year-old Clarendon man narrowly escaped being beaten by an angry mob last week after he was accused of molesting his two-year-old niece.
Unable to get to the man, the angry residents set his house ablaze and burnt it to the ground. The accused man while escaping the beating was arrested by the police and was charged with carnal abuse.
He appeared before the Christiana Resident Magis-trate's Court last Friday and was remanded at the Mandeville Police lock-up where he will remain until he returns to court early next month.
Police arrested the man after the baby's mother saw her bleeding profusely from her vagina and made a report to the police.
uncle's care
THE STAR was told that the child was left in her uncle's care by her mother who had to run an errand. However, on her return at about 8:30 a.m., it was discovered that her daughter was bleeding. The baby was rushed to the Percy Junor Hospital where she was admitted in a stable condition before a report was made to the police.
Examinations carried out by doctors revealed that the infant was sexually abused. Following the revelation, the uncle, THE STAR learnt, attempted to flee his home but was chased by residents.
Before the residents could get to him, however, he was held by a district constable who took him into custody.
Residents who were upset that they did not get a chance to beat the accused went to his house and set it ablaze.
