Although yesterday’s announcement that Futurama would be coming back for a highly unlikely eighth season was welcome, the notable absence of John DiMaggio in the list of returning voice actors has gotten much more noticeable after reports that the show has recast the role of Bender in advance of the show’s upcoming table reads. And fans—as well as DiMaggio—are not happy.
To clarify, here’s exactly what Deadline says about what’s happening: “The role is currently being recast ahead of the first table read on Monday. The decision was made after DiMaggio’s negotiations with Futurama studio 20th Television Animation came to a standstill though there is a desire on both sides to have him rejoin the cast and reprise his role.” A table read is not a recording, so there’s still time for DiMaggio and the studio, which is owned by Disney, to come to terms so that the voice actor can return before actual recording starts.
No one but DiMaggio and 20th Television are privy to exactly what the issue is, or why the series’ other two leads, Billy West (who voices Fry) and Katey Sagal (Leela) were able to work out deals while DiMaggio couldn’t. However, according to Deadline, sources say that DiMaggio wants more money than his co-stars negotiated for—not because he considers himself more important, but because he thinks the offer isn’t commensurate with the popularity of Futurama. Given that this is the show’s umpteenth revival, it’s probably safe to say DiMaggio has a point.

There’s also the matter of the fans, who are almost unanimous in their support for DiMaggio and their dismay at the idea of someone else playing Bender, many of whom have expressed their refusal to watch a DiMaggio-less Futurama, and the voice actor has been retweeting these fans. As a fan myself, I’m with the others—Futurama without DiMaggio as the voice of Bender is like The Simpsons without Dan Castellaneta as Homer. The character is so iconic and essential to Futurama that changing the voice would change the entire tenor (no pun intended) of the series. DiMaggio has voiced Bender since the show premiered in 1999; what fan wouldn’t be upset by this needless change?

There’s also the matter that Disney has a really bad habit of not paying talent what they’re worth, so I’d be on DiMaggio’s side out of principle even if I wasn’t a Bender fan. Here’s hoping the folks at 20th Television and Hulu see the outcry and realize that without him, there’s not much of a point to reviving Futurama again. And if not, Maybe DiMaggio can go make his own show about a drunk robot with tendencies to kill all humans, but with blackjack and hookers. In fact, forget the show.

Why original Futurama star John DiMaggio won't voice Bender in the Hulu revival... for now

Futurama

While the news of a Futurama revival coming to Hulu may entice fans of the adult animated series, there's one name curiously missing from the call sheet.
John DiMaggio, who voiced Bender on the original show, in addition to various other characters, is not presently returning with Billy West (Fry/Zoidberg/Prof. Farnsworth), Katey Sagal (Leela), Tress MacNeille (Linda van Schoonhoven), Maurice LaMarche (Morbo), Lauren Tom (Amy), Phil LaMarr (Hermes), and David Herman (Scruffy).
Sources close to the situation tell EW that negotiations with DiMaggio have hit a standstill, which has prompted Hulu and 20th Television Animation to search for another voice actor with the first table read looming this coming Monday. Though, both sides of the situation — DiMaggio's side and the studio side — want the actor to return.

EW reached out to representatives for Hulu and DiMaggio for comment.

Futurama followed Fry, a pizza-delivery guy from New York who accidentally gets cryogenically frozen, waking up 1,000 years in the future. His only descendent, Prof. Farnsworth, takes him in and puts him to work on his delivery crew, which includes Captain Leela, robot Bender, accountant Hermes, intern Amy, and lobster-like Dr. Zoidberg.
Hulu announced Wednesday that 20 brand-new episodes of the show, which originally aired from 1999-2013, were ordered for a planned premiere in 2023. Series creators Matt Groening and David X. Cohen commented on the announcement, expressing their excitement for the opportunity. An image of Bender, DiMaggio's alcohol-binging, cigar-smoking, cuss-slinging robot, was used by Hulu to promote the news of the revival — but DiMaggio's name was not mentioned among the returning cast.

Hulu and 20th Television went out to West, Sagal, and DiMaggio at the same time last year to begin negotiations. This is an example of "favored nations," which is a pretty standard negotiation process in the animation field that seeks to pay series regulars the same. The goal was to close those deals before reaching out to other voice actors from the original show.
According to sources, an offer was extended to all three actors. West and Sagal accepted. DiMaggio's team did not, seeing it as a lowball and not competitive to the market or the legacy of Futurama. One source suggests the favored nations process fell apart with West and Sagal taking the offer without consulting DiMaggio. Another source refutes that notion.
DiMaggio's side counter-offered with more competitive quotes, but some sources suggest conversations with the studio ended in November and have not progressed since.
A search for a replacement voice actor is still ongoing, while the offer for DiMaggio to return remains on the table for the time being, EW has learned. The studio doesn't want to pay DiMaggio more than West and Sagal, which contributes to the standstill.
Meanwhile, the revival is moving forward, with Groening and Cohen, as well as Hulu, wanting to do it.
Fans of Futurama took note of DiMaggio's absence from the revival announcement, and the actor has been promoting those sentiments on social media, some of which propose a boycott of the new season. DiMaggio is still willing and available to return as Bender, assuming an agreeable deal can be reached. The original Futurama stars and crew also want him to return, per sources.
"Thanks for the concern and the props, everyone. I really appreciate it," DiMaggio tweeted Wednesday to his fans. "Don't worry, I'll keep you posted, but until then… CHEESE IT! #bendergate."

This isn't all to say DiMaggio won't be involved in the revival at all. The drawn-out development process for animation leaves tremendous room for him to join in some capacity, even after Monday's table read. Whether or not fans will hear his voice come out of an animated Bender in 2023, however, remains a question.

Futurama

Original Futurama voice actor John DiMaggio spoke out Tuesday night about his decision not to return for the upcoming revival of the animated sci-fi comedy on Hulu.
"I've been thinking about everything that's been going on these past months," DiMaggio began, referring to a negotiation standstill between his team and the studio over what he should be paid to reprise the role of Bender. "And just to be clear, I don't think that only I deserve to be paid more. I think the entire cast does."

Hulu announced last week that a revival of Futurama was ordered, nine years after the final season aired on Fox. Set for 2023 from producers at 20th Television Animation, the new episodes will feature many of the original cast members, including Billy West (Fry/Zoidberg/Prof. Farnsworth) and Katey Sagal (Leela). Series creators Matt Groening and David X. Cohen are also on board.

DiMaggio, who voiced the robot Bender in the original Futurama run, is not currently returning due to a salary dispute.

EW reported earlier that while West and Sagal accepted Hulu's offers, DiMaggio felt his was too low and he countered. A stalemate has now occurred, with neither side appearing to budge. A table read for the revival was held this past Monday without DiMaggio.

"Negotiations are a natural part of working in show business," DiMaggio continues. "Everyone has a different strategy & different boundaries. Their 'price.' Some accept offers, some hold their ground. Bender is part of my soul & nothing about this is meant to be disrespectful to the fans or my Futurama family. It's about self-respect. And honestly, being tired of an industry that's become far too corporate and takes advantage of artist's time & talent."

DiMaggio says it's not his place to provide fans with every detail on the matter, but he's "still hoping for the best." In the meantime, he says he's set to shoot AMC's Interview With the Vampire series in New Orleans.
