NBC, traditionally the first broadcast network to present its fall lineup at the upfronts, once again became the first net to give a series order to a pilot. It went to Quantum Leap, a reboot of the popular 1990s sci-fi drama, which stars Raymond Lee. (First-look photo above)

As Deadline reported in the Early Pilot Buzz story earlier this week, Quantum Leap appeared a lock for a series pickup with Lee poised to potentially become one of the breakout stars of next season. It is NBC’s only 2022 drama pilot that was in consideration for the fall schedule; two others Unbroken and Blank Slate, would be evaluated for a launch in November or midseason.

I hear the Quantum Leap pilot will undergo some reshoots. They are said to be related to the direction, not casting. In addition to Raymond Lee, the cast also includes Caitlin Bassett, Ernie Hudson, Mason Alexander Park and Nanrisa Lee.

The pickup also will likely be the first of several this season for projects based on popular IP, something the broadcast networks rely more and more in the an uphill battle for eyeballs. The Rookie spinoff is a frontrunner at ABC; the CW only has IP-based pilots with Walker: Independence, the Supernatural; prequel The Winchesters and Gotham Knights.

Written and executive produced by Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt and executive produced by Martin Gero as well as Quantum Leap creator/EP Don Bellisario and EP/co-narrator Deborah Pratt, the follow-up series is set in present time. It’s been 30 years since Dr. Sam Beckett (Scott Bakula) stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished. Now a new team has been assembled to restart the project in the hopes of understanding the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it.

The series is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, with Lilien and Wynbrandt exec producing for their I Have an Idea! Entertainment, Bellisario for his Belisarius Productions, and Gero via his Quinn’s House Productions.

I enjoyed the original. I think they brought it back before and it was a dud. Hopefully this turns out well but with all the cultural messaging in media nowadays old timers won't likely be pleased.

Quantum Leap is changing course.
NBC's reboot of the popular '90s sci-fi drama is switching showrunners only three episodes into its first season. Blindspot creator Martin Gero, who's been an executive producer on the series since it began development, is taking over as showrunner, replacing Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt, who will remain on board as EPs. Dean Georgaris (Bluff City Law) is also joining the series as an executive producer.
According to Deadline, which first reported the shakeup, NBC was "not entirely happy with the series pilot," which will still air, but not as the first episode. Reportedly, episode 3 may now kick things off.
Representatives for NBC did not immediately respond to EW's request for comment on the behind-the-scenes changes.

Picking up 30 years after the original Quantum Leap, the new iteration stars Raymond Lee as Dr. Ben Seong, who follows in the footsteps of Scott Bakula's Dr. Sam Beckett by restarting his time-traveling project and taking an unauthorized journey into the past.

Wynbrandt recently told EW that the new series would have something for fans of the original series and newcomers alike. "It was important to follow in their footsteps by continuing the legacy and introduce our audience to a new set of characters and new story while connecting the two worlds," he said.
The creative changes aren't expected to affect production of the show, as season 1 filming continues uninterrupted.
Quantum Leap premieres Sept. 19 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.

Ernie Hudson Says Quantum Leap's Magic 'Would Love to Get' Scott Bakula's Sam Beckett Back Home

Quantum Leap Vet Scott Bakula Reveals His 'Very Difficult Decision' to Pass on NBC Reboot

In an Instagram post on Thursday afternoon, Bakula wrote:

To Quantum Leap fans around the world, in an effort to quiet the rumors and move on…
.
First of all, thanks for hanging around through the decades!
.
Here’s the simple version of what’s going on with the Quantum Leap reboot and me:
.
I have no connection with the new show, either in front of the camera or behind it.
.
In January, the pilot was sold and a script was sent to me because the character of Sam Beckett was in it, which makes sense, right? As so many of you have been asking me the last several months, “How could you do QL without Sam?“ (or Al, for that matter). Well, I guess we’re about to find out.
.
That’s the story. As the show has always been near and dear to my heart, it was a very difficult decision to pass on the project, a decision that has upset and confused so many fans of the original series. However, the idea of anyone ‘leaping’ around in time and walking a mile in someone else’s shoes, remains a very appealing concept and so worthy of exploration, especially given the current state of mankind. In that spirit, I am crossing my fingers that this new cast and crew are lucky enough to tap into the magic that propelled the original Quantum Leap into the hearts and minds of generations past and present.
.
I wish them good luck and happy leaping!

Sam BETTER be back

I've been wanting a reboot of this for years but after watching a couple of trailers for the reboot I have no interest in seeing it.

Maybe I'll change my mind but I feel like the tone of the reboot, casting, etc. just seemed off.

It reminded me more of a time travel show I saw on Hulu (Timeless) more than Quantum Leap.

Watched some of the 1st episode and it is mostly the Asian dude telling his white woman how much he loved her. I changed the channel, might check it out later some other time.

I am getting sick of these reboots know I do enjoy the new version of Star Trek but they get too Carried away with these other reboots

that is why I cannot just dismiss all reboots

because the Star Trek universe has GREATLY benefited from Strange Worlds.

Quantum Leap’ Renewed For Season 2 At NBC

NBC renewed hit freshman series Quantum Leap, its reboot of the popular 1990s sci-fi drama, for a second season, the network announced Monday.

The renewal comes midway through the series’ first season which has seen solid ratings. Starring Raymond Lee, the Quantum Leap pilot is currently up to a 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demo and 10.8 million viewers across linear, digital and streaming platforms, according to Nielsen and the network. The reboot is NBC’s best-ever drama launch on Peacock and is the #2 new broadcast show of the season in the 18-49 demo.

‘Quantum Leap’ Canceled By NBC After 2 Seasons

EXCLUSIVE: NBC has decided not to proceed with a third season of its Quantum Leap reboot starring Raymond Lee. The news comes more than a month after the two-hour Season 2 finale aired Feb. 20.

The development is not entirely surprising as the series, from Universal Television, had been on the bubble. That is in contrast to last season when Quantum Leap received a very early renewal in December 2022.

The need to create better material for this generation is the reason why many of these reboots are being canceled. There are currently too many options for this generation of people to choose from .

Agreed.

Like many in the media have said in recent years ... it seems like they don't even trust new, fresh ideas. They're happy to just mine all the older I.P. (intellectual property) from the past 20 - 40 years for every last drop of financial return(s). Hoping the built-in fanbase of adults will want to take their kids ... get the merchandise, etc.

As Cord Jefferson said in his Oscar-winning speech ... more studios need to trust in smaller films. Why the need for all the $200M blockbusters? What about making a shitload of smaller-budget films (which may hit big)?

We're definitely seeing the superhero fatigue in recent memory.

asian lead for the sake of asian leads

Y'all hate diversity more than white men do :smh:

Why couldn't the Asian man have been the best actor available?

This is from April so most likely it's a wrap for it being saved.

why is every black male character gay abusive or suicidal (sometimes all three)
if they even bother to have one
why when trannys are .04% of earth
and fags 7% (being incredibly generous) in the us and 3% of the entire population
they are in every single show
also

You mean on this show or in general? (I haven't seen the show.)

You gotta be honest and not exaggerate. I watch a lot of shows with no transgender characters.

If it really was every show, I could see your concern... I think it is even fair to criticize it being in too many shows.

But it seems a lot of people who make comments like you did get mad that they have any representation at all.

Tyler Perry! LOL

I can't name 5 show runners period, let alone get into demographics.
