TV Discussion: Creature Commandos animated seried from DC Studios

Creature Commandos
2024

7.5/10

This animated series debut December of last year. I had no plans on watching it, but an article came out last year that the series maybe connected to the upcoming “Superman” film. So I decided to binge it last night on the road on HBO MAX (they went back to their former name…).

I went into it not expecting much, but this series definitely impressed me and was entertaining from the start to finish. I am not familiar with these characters from the comics cuz I haven’t read books since the early 90s. So I went into it blind.

The series picks up some time after the events of “The Suicide Squad 2” film. The series goes right into character introduction and their development/backstory/origins is told thru-out the season.

James Gunn is behind the series. He debuts the new DC STUDIOS Logo w/Superman. There is an animated version of him in the opening title roll.

One thing that impressed me was the level of graphic violence thru-out the series. I thought Marvel took it too another level with “Hit Monkey”, but Gunn took it up another notch. He did not hold back. There is also a number of intense scenes thru-out the episode that I was not expecting.

A number of characters from the Suicide Squad films and Peacemaker are shown. I suspect we might see a couple of the Creature Commandos in the upcoming Peacemaker season 2.

Overall it’s a highly entertaining series. I do not know if it follows the books closely, but I do not think it matters.

There are only 7 episodes that run about 20 minutes each. Binging them is like watching a 3 hour film.

The series has been approved for a season 2. No word on its premiere at this time.

Synopsis

A black ops team is formulated out of prisoners, laying the foundation for the Suicide Squad.
