The weekend death of unbeaten Chicago welterweight boxer Ed Brown after being shot in the head haunts his veteran manager Cameron Dunkin, who lamented Monday, “He was going to be champion of the world, and we all knew it.”

Brown, 25, was out with a 19-year-old female cousin early Saturday when someone drove by and shot him near Kedzie Avenue and Warren Boulevard, fatally wounding a prospect who was 20-0 with 16 knockouts and eyeing a breakout 2017.

Brown had trained for years at the nearby Garfield Park Golden Dome Fieldhouse.

Dunkin said he’d just retained Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s close friend and assistant trainer, Nate Jones, to supervise a training regimen for Brown, and following an impressive unanimous-decision triumph in November, the fighter was going to be pitched for a date on Showtime’s “ShoBox” series in February, Dunkin said.

Timothy Bradley-Jessie Vargas undercard when Brown showed off his Chicago pride by wearing apparel that featured a Chicago Blackhawks logo.

Brown’s one-sided victory by decision over veteran Albert Mensah of Ghana in Philadelphia in November moved Dunkin to accelerate the push. “That’s what I wanted to see,” Dunkin said. “That was the step-up fight.”

Boxing publicist Bernie Bahrmasel watched Brown fight in Chicago in September, and assessed, “Always smiling, always polite. You watched the kid, he was just so good. You could see he was going to be a champion.

“So very sad. Incredibly sad.”

A sticking point in Dunkin’s plans was that Brown wouldn’t agree to leave Chicago, training at the Golden Dome Fieldhouse, in East Garfield Park, where other talented fighters, including Adrian Granados, also have trained.

Brown spent his life on the West Side, refusing to leave because he wanted to prove he could “make it” in Chicago, Cericola said.

“He had an open ticket to go anywhere but he just wanted to show that he didn't have to go elsewhere to make it,” Cericola said.

“Not only was he in the worst city in America for murder, he was in the worst part of the city. I tried every way to get him to leave,” Dunkin said. “He wasn’t doing anything bad (before the shooting), didn’t break the law, but he’s around those people, and that’s what I had told him before, that, ‘You can be walking down the street there (and be in danger). You’re living in a war zone. Why do you want to stay?”

Brown responded: “I know, but I get along with everybody, I mind my own business. My family’s here, my girl’s here. I’m just going to stay here until we hit big, and then I’ll get out.”

Dunkin said he sought to ensure Brown’s account by drug-testing the fighter and having mutual friends watch for any red flags.

“He was doing good, but he was there, and when you’re in that environment, you don’t have to be shooting at anybody. You can just be sitting there … and that’s what happened,” Dunkin said.

“It’s horrible. Twenty-five years old. Forget boxing. Twenty-five years old. It happens there 100 times a month, and because I’m not there and I don’t know the people, it doesn’t affect me.

“But, boy, when you know the person, it sucks.”

Brown, of the 500 block of North Lavergne Avenue in Austin, was pronounced dead at 4:04 p.m. Sunday at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Brown's family has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay his funeral expenses. A vigil will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday near the Golden Dome Fieldhouse, at Central Park Avenue and Madison Street.

WEST GARFIELD PARK — The gun violence in Chicago claimed another life on the West Side, this time one of the city’s best professional boxing prospects in years.

Ed Brown, a 25-year-old undefeated professional boxer known as "Bad Boy" in part because he'd already survived three shootings, was gunned down Saturday in his home neighborhood of West Garfield Park.

According to Chicago Police, Brown was sitting with his sister in a car parked in the 3200 block of West Warren Avenue at 1:10 a.m. Saturday when a silver vehicle pulled alongside them.

Someone inside sprayed shots into Brown's car. He was hit in the head and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died Sunday.

Brown’s 19-year-old sister suffered a minor leg injury and will survive, according to police. Brown leaves behind a 3-year-old daughter, Kayla Brown, whose name he had tattooed on his wrist.

According to Mike Cericola, Brown’s co-manager, he was coming back from a midnight training session at a local X-Sport when he was murdered.

“He was 100-percent committed to being a professional fighter, but this isn’t a neighborhood where you can put on your shoes at night and have a run. So he went to the gym to do his work,” Cericola said.

Brown had run his professional record to 20-0 after beating Albert Mensah in Philadelphia a little more than three weeks ago. According to boxing experts, commentators, fans, and his management, Brown was considered the “uncrowned champion” of the welterweight division.

He had recently signed with the famous Cameron Dunkin’s management company, which keeps a stable of world champions on its roster.

"Cameron Dunkin is the best manager in boxing, so I'll just refer to him," said Cericola. "And he said Ed was his next champion."

Brown had lived a life full of tragedy, with always the monstrous specter of hope on the horizon for both himself and what remained of his family and friends, say those who knew him. His mother had been trampled to death in the E2 nightclub stampede that killed 21 people when Brown was 12. His father spent Brown's childhood locked up in prison.

Brown himself had survived eight bullets before the last claimed his life, the shootings often happening in a pattern that repeated itself with his murder. Win a fight, get shot.

He had been first shot in the chest at a night club one week after winning his first professional fight. He returned six months later, won two more fights and was shot again, this time on a party bus after two men got into a fight and one of them started shooting.

He was shot yet again during a drive by just before the 2012 Olympic Trials, where Brown expected to make the United States team. Following that last shooting, he decided to turn professional and earn a living as a boxer, where he could collect enough purse and sponsorship money to leave his violence-plagued, but beloved neighborhood behind.

Brown had talked with a grim certainty, now borne out, about his attitude toward Chicago in a piece by local writer Bill Hillmann.

“I love Chicago," Brown told Hillmann. “I’ll love Chicago till the day I die. I’m happy for any Chicagoan — black, white, Mexican — that’s doing good. But all I can tell the kids is, get what you can and get out. Get yours and get up outta here, ’cause people gonna hate on you, gonna shoot at you and gonna kill you.”

“We talked about leaving a lot with him,” Cericola said. “Cameron Dunkin gave him an open ticket, anywhere he wanted to go, any gym, any trainers. He was thrilled when I brought him to California last June for his fight. He took pictures of everything that said ‘California’ on it. He loved it out there. But he just didn’t know anything outside of Chicago. When he fought in New Mexico he thought he was in Mexico. I couldn’t convince him he wasn’t in Mexico,” Cericola says with a sad, bemused laugh.

Hillmann, who told DNAinfo he got a “bad feeling” when he had talked with Brown about Chicago, regarded the nickname “Bad Boy” as an irony after being around the young fighter.

“It was really ironic, because he had a goodness about him, he was kind and endearing, as soon as you met him and talked to him for five minutes you automatically were rooting for him, he had a really magnetic personality,” said Hillmann.

“But everybody was worried about him, he was very active on Facebook, always on social media, always on there after working out, after running, and that was scary if there is someone out there looking for you, but he was just being himself, he’s that kind of a guy, an open, engaging person.”

Cericola, the co-manager, said at this point he does not even believe it was something personal, just people murdering each other because that is how things are done right now where Brown grew up and lived.

“They don’t come and shoot because they know you and want to shoot you, they come and shoot because this is an area where they do that, that’s what’s crazy.”

Cericola said people looked up to Brown.

“I would say hope died,” said Cericola. “So many people looked to him. His mother died in a stampede, he was raised in the Park Districts and the streets, if he could make it I could make it. But no mater what he did he couldn’t make it — Hall of Fame, world champion fighters couldn’t beat him, but some punk with a gun could.”

Community activist Andrew Holmes, whose daughter was murdered last year in Indianapolis, is offering $1,000 to anyone with information that helps capture Brown’s killer. According to Cericola, Holmes is already planning to raise more.

A GoFundMe has been started for Brown’s funeral expenses at “Ed Bad Boy Brown.” Cericola warned that several others had been started under his name, honest or not, but that the page under his name will go to Brown’s funeral.

Police have not made any arrests in the shooting and the investigation continues.

It really sucks that in today's climate decent black people need to leave the community for fear of Their Own mortality. It didn't use to be like this, but now if we don't leave either we or our belongings are prey.

These ignorant poor predators don't care about their own lives so they can give less than a shit about ours. They break and our homes when we are at work, they roll up and shoot us when were walking on the street. I didn't want to move to the suburbs, but when I came home and my apartment was broken into and my belongings were taken, and the door was kicked in I knew that I could no longer live on the Poor Side of Town

RIP to the Dead, and Rest in Piss to the Killer

Terrible.

RIP

This is some Ricky Boyz N The Hood type shit.

He didn't realize his reputation had preceded him. His profile was big enough for people to recognize him as an up and coming champ. He'd already made it, he was a name. Maybe he didn't have the big bucks to match it but he was a name. When you have a reputation that comes with haters automatically, whether you see them all or not and haters will get at you or the people you love. So you gotta move differently than you use to. Take the opportunity to protect yourself and your loved ones when it's there.

Lingering around low life's, the hopeless and miserable just to prove something to yourself and to who? It would have been a very inspiring rags to riches story that magnifies his reputation but it still could've been that even if he left that space.

Don't cast your pearls before swine. They don't give a fuck about you.

At 25 your still in la-la land in thinking it won't and can't happen to me.Three separate times he's been shot and the fourth time they finally killed him and to be honest he was lucky after the first time and should of taken the hint and moved for himself, his family and friends. You can't run from death but you can lessen the odds with the use of common sense which isn't that common these days.

Rip to him.

That Austin area is a mess. PURE mess!! A shit load of murders in Chicago have happened in that area. But imho, most people who get shot execution style arent shot by mistake. When a mofo shoot you in your head, most times youre the intended target. And after reading that article, and all the things that happened to Brown outside of the boxing ring, I think he was the intended target. Seems like he couldve been living a double life. Now just because he was the intended target, that doesnt mean he shouldve lost his life, but when you investigate a murder you need to consider all the variables.

I always find it funny how the media and police can claim someone is a innocent victim when THEY CLAIM they dont know who the shooter is. You havent questioned the shooter ...so you dont know the motive. You just go straight to the family; people who will usually paint a picture as if their deceased family member was a complete angel. You dont know the motive....which means what youre telling the public is more propaganda than facts.

That Cericola guy said, "Get yours and get up outta here, ’cause people gonna hate on you, gonna shoot at you and gonna kill you.” Theres SOME truth in that. People hate you when youre doing better than them. No matter what type of neighborhood youre in. But all the fear mongering bs is one of the reasons why Black folks in Chicago are dividing and getting their neighborhoods snatched up. That "gets yours and get out" mentality is the reason why Black folks AS A WHOLE are vulnerable in America. Im not saying that you should stay in the hood and stay around knucklehead niggas, but that "pack up and leave" shit aint the only option. Thats just a option that White folks like to dish out because youre in their way.

A childhood friend of mine got killed a little over a year ago in the Austin community. I hope the suburb of Oak Park will annex some of Chicago's Austin community.

Simple as that!

I doubt it. Thats not how it works in Chicago. The bs mainly jumps from Austin to Humboldt Park...and skips everything around and in between. For the most part, Austin looks like a fucking shithole, but next door (Oak Park) doesnt. The city claims the crime is uncontrollable, yet theyve found a way to keep the crime extremely isolated.

Let me use a better example. I stay in Hyde Park. Theyve built so much shit in this area since Obama became President, they got it looking like a miniature Downtown. But I can go literally a few blocks west of Hyde Park and it looks like a fucking bomb hit those neighborhoods. A guy got killed in Hyde Park not long ago, but for the most part Murders are non existent in Hyde Park. Its more theft than anything else. But go a few blocks over, they shooting.

All those poor neighborhoods surrounding Hyde Park are in the same "tax area" as Hyde Park. Now Hyde Park may generate more tax dollars than those poor areas, but those poor areas still generate tax dollars. The city (Aldermen, etc) allowed construction companies to use the tax dollars from those poor surrounding areas to beautify Hyde Park, but they aint did shit for those poor areas. What they gave those poor people in return for their tax dollars was shit like Section 8 vouchers; and Black people went along with it. They had plans to fix up those areas (Englewood included) but after we lost that Olympic bid they said fuck it!

Keep one area nice, keep the surrounding areas fucked up via economic deprivation. Thats the game....thats how they keep things balanced in Chicago.
Bs gentrification game...yet Black folks still dont get it.

It's a dirty game for sure. Some of Chicago's neighborhoods really went downhill starting back in the 90s when the high rise projects got torn down. This is why housing is so important and the position of HUD. With Ben Carson being selected to head HUD more gentrification in sight:smh:. There is is plan to purge blacks from Chicago and like you said we(Chicago's black community) don't get it:smh:.

Never fucked with the West side when I came through. I pretty much just resided on the South side. But my fam warned me about that West side. I had no choice but to listen.

Why is the chi the way it is? So many hateful ass cats who never wanna see cats succeed or get put on

My cousins out there tell me how segregated the city is and it's damn near impossible to break into the rap game without strong drug ties.

West side is bad but everyone living on the west side are not bad people. I live just a few miles from the west side and it is all about how you carry yourself. If you on bullshit then you will be knee deep in it in no time. Believe it or not the west side is valuable real estate but black people do not realize that.

Its all from a cycle of fucked up parenting.
The mom is a hoe and the pops is either dead, in jail or in the wind.

Certain parts of the city have people who have never left their block.

Chicago is a thriving beautiful city but these niggas have never left their area...shit most of them never been downtown.

As far as brrak into the rap game you have to have drugs ties...hell naw..more like gang ties.
