Tillerson was in Texas for his son’s wedding and refused to come back to Washington, several sources told NBC. The top diplomat was noticeably missing, but a State Department spokeswoman said he’s “just taking a little time off.”
Then-Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly — now chief of staff — and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis begged Tillerson not to throw in the towel, NBC News reported.
“They did beg him to stay,” a high-ranking administration official told the network. “They just wanted stability.”
Tillerson referred to Trump as a "moron" during a high-level Pentagon meeting.

R.C. Hammond, Tillerson’s top spokesman, denied to NBC News that his boss threatened to quit or that he called Trump a moron days earlier.
Tillerson says U.S. talking to North Korea amid mounting tension
The remark came during a two-hour Pentagon meeting in a room called “The Tank,” according to NBC News, which cited sources either at the tense encounter or briefed afterward.
The day before, Trump held a White House situation room meeting in which he mulled firing the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan and criticized troop movements.
NBC News noted it wasn’t clear if Trump was aware Tillerson called him a “moron,” or that he allegedly wanted to quit this summer.
Hammond, Tillerson’s spokesman, told NBC News that the secretary’s meetings with Pence were focused solely on policy. The only time they weren’t was when the veep wanted Tillerson’s input on Nikki Haley, ambassador to the UN, about her role in the administration.

When it comes to policy Trump and Tillerson have been particularly at odds.
Tillerson reportedly wanted Trump to certify the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran, which the President has labeled one sided against the U.S.
And on Sunday, the President sent a tweet telling Tillerson his efforts to engage North Korea are useless.
“I told Rex Tillerson, our wonderful Secretary of State, that he is wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man...,” Trump said using his nickname for North Korean strongman Kim Jong Un. “...Save your energy Rex, we'll do what has to be done!”
