RIP filling the hole at ILB
I guess the Steelers think Shazier is gonna hobble back onto the field. Bostic isn’t an answer either. Really pissed about this pick. Easy F
Posted by dinner on Apr 27, 2018 | 10:37 PM
There was no filling the hole at this point
Just drafting a player to check a box
Posted by Greig Clawson on Apr 27, 2018 | 10:39 PM
I'm not really worried at ILB
as that’s really the role that Bostic/Edmunds is filling. I do want some depth at FS though.
Posted by igloojoe on Apr 27, 2018 | 10:43 PM
So you’re OK with Edmunds playing on 2nd down trying to bring down a 225 RB?
We stuck in our base D almost the entire Jags game because, um, well, I just do not have a clue. Edmunds allows them to play big safety and big dime. Who takes over for an oft-injured Bostic? The crowd wanted Spence and they got him last year. They happy now?
Time for Pitt to go out and sign one of those 30-35-year-old ILB on the market and pray they can stay healthy.

Thumpers are much easier to get than cover guys.
We already have 2 from the PS that are classic thumpers. If Bostic goes down, we’ll play Matekevich and run the same rotation we did this last year.
I’m not saying that I don’t hope we get a LBer, but there are still people on the board that could fill in if need be. Guys like Dion Hamilton, Joel Iyiegbuniwe, Jewell (Who I think will slide into the 5th), Oko, Skai Moore, Tegray Scales, or, my absolute favorite, Micah Kiser.
Of course, we could also just sign Lawrence Timmons again, but I don’t know if that’d work.

I wanted Evans in the first.
But I don’t want the Steelers to draft an ILB if they don’t like him long term.
Posted by Renegade_ on Apr 27, 2018 | 10:46 PM
We really only have 1 hole
Left and its at ILB. After the big 4 were taken we kind of ran out of options IMO. Not much depth there this year.
Best we can hope for is a roster cut causality this preseason to help hold us over to draft one early next year.
Posted by LongJourneyAhead on Apr 27, 2018 | 10:47 PM
They are either going to have Edmunds or burnett
Play a hybrid linebacker safety position like bucannon.
Posted by ironcadet on Apr 27, 2018 | 11:00 PM
What the actual fuck.
Awful pick and makes 0 sense. We have no defense and no inside linebacker and we also need another outside linebacker.. We are not winning the superbowl this year with this defense no way.

I’d have absolutely no problem taking him there. He’s still recovering from his injury but did most if not all of his testing and performed well. As a fifth round pick he’s worth taking a chance on.
Posted by Hernleyt86 on Apr 27, 2018 | 10:55 PM
Cichy

Posted by GryffinGuitarVet on Apr 27, 2018 | 10:44 PM
Gotta be off field things
Remember that they know answers where we have questions. Jefferson’s red flags above the neck are well known. The color people were just hinting that Harrison is a "difficult personality." Both explanations are more than enough if true.
Posted by DropTheHammer on Apr 27, 2018 | 10:47 PM
Harrison
He is too similar to Edmunds, they play the same physical thumping style.
Posted by Beijing_Breakfast on Apr 27, 2018 | 10:51 PM

Interesting pattern. Defensive reach – at least apparently – in Round 1 and then offensive need/BPA, offensive BPAand offensive ???
Posted by DropTheHammer on Apr 27, 2018 | 10:44 PM
after where Reid/Harrison fell
You still think it is a reach?
Just wondering because I feel like I haven’t read your take on the pick yet.
Posted by mahal24 on Apr 27, 2018 | 10:48 PM
I know public opinion about grades.
Based on that Edmunds would have been value for our 2nd and a bargain for a 3rd. That makes him a reach at 1:28.
But the team doesn’t pick based on public opinion. And lord knows that the public can be wrong. [Political commentary omitted with ill grace]. We will know if it was an actual reach 3-4 years from now.
Posted by DropTheHammer on Apr 27, 2018 | 10:52 PM
And FWIW I have been high on Edmunds...
…as an ideal answer to the idea of picking roles instead of positions, which I actually wrote an article about. Versatility and athleticism reall are at a premium in the defensive center, when tied to football IQ. That was the biggest question mark, and apparently an asset the F.O. Thought he excelled at. So that part is encouraging.
Posted by DropTheHammer on Apr 27, 2018 | 10:58 PM
I guess the question becomes
Is there anyone who wouldn’t have been a reach at 28?
Posted by Greig Clawson on Apr 27, 2018 | 11:00 PM
I do
Length is great and he’s got a ton of potential if he pans out. This reminds me of the Hawkins pick for sure. Munchak is a wizard with OL and I’m not going to doubt the guy now. He fills the need at swing tackle after we lost Hubbard too, so I’m happy with this pick. Guy has some good hand usage but needs to work on power to strength and finishing through.
Edmunds wasn’t a reach. By rumors he was a top 40 pick, it seems the league liked him better than Reid and Harrison actually. I like how he fills that moneybacker role but I’m not all too high on it yet.
I love the Washington and Rudolph picks. Great value and Washington will help immediately while Rudolph stays with his favorite target and can learn from ben, he will be a starter in this league for sure.
Posted by BuzzkillSteelers on Apr 27, 2018 | 10:52 PM
I don't hate our draft.
But it’s so confusing so far. Makes me feel like we’re drafting for the future…but win now at the same time. Weird.
Posted by Renegade_ on Apr 27, 2018 | 10:48 PM
This is an underrated pick
He’s raw but man he’s got the potential and we know my man Munchak can develop these guys well. He’s a great swing tackle and that was the biggest hidden need and I’m so happy the Steelers addressed it. This pick will pay dividends, as will the Rudolph pick. Many may be hating this draft right now, but I throughly like how under the radar it is. I’m liking it. Nice job Colbert and co. Now draft Shaun Dion Hamilton or Jermaine Carter and I’ll be a happy man.
Posted by BuzzkillSteelers on Apr 27, 2018 | 10:48 PM
This is definetly a pick we can not judge until 2020
Could be the next Marcus Gilbert or he could be a bust.
Posted by Bamaburgh on Apr 27, 2018 | 10:54 PM
2020? He will most likely see playing time this year as our swing tackle.
Posted by Flipsteeler on Apr 27, 2018 | 10:55 PM
I mean it is 2018 and 2020 is two years from now
Could completly bust as a swing tackle. 2 years is a good time table for a raw prospect.
Posted by Bamaburgh on Apr 27, 2018 | 11:00 PM
I’d be happy with either of them too but as I mentioned above we can’t forget Jack Cichy
Now draft Shaun Dion Hamilton or Jermaine Carter and I’ll be a happy man.
I think he’s going to be a good player in this league.

I dont understand this pick at all.......
A developmental, raw, and, generally viewed, underwhelming Tackle prospect.
Either Kevin Colbert is a mad genius that’s so far ahead of the curve on these picks, or this is a draft that will go down as the most bizarre draft in franchise history.
I’m really leaning to the latter at this point……

Posted by hawk fanatic on Apr 27, 2018 | 10:52 PM
Let him be coached by Mike Munchak a year or two
It is a good pick, I can’t complain considering the Steelers have one of the best O-Line coaches. But it’s been THREErounds and 4 picks so far, and still no Inside Linebacker. Like, I can’t complain about Rudolph (I was hoping it happened), I definitely can’t complain about Washington in the Colbert/Tomlin era (Let’s all forget Limas Sweed, He was a glitch in the Matrix), especially after Martavis Bryant got shipped to Oakland (And we are probably facing him) and a year ago JJSS came here and was a mismatch creating beast. I could complain about Edmounds, because he adds to the big problem in the secondary which is that the can’t tackle, but he’s solid. Hopefully Bradley can turn the group around. And the O-Line is starting to age, so I can’t complain a lot about this one. But I can complain about the fact that it has been 4 picks so far, and there is no help at ILB. Like … I’m really hoping up next is a Linebacker, because so far the ILB depth is not as good as it should, either in quality or quantity.

This is definetly a pick we can not judge until 2020
Could be the next Marcus Gilbert or he could be a bust.

I’d be happy with either of them too but as I mentioned above we can’t forget Jack Cichy
Now draft Shaun Dion Hamilton or Jermaine Carter and I’ll be a happy man.
I think he’s going to be a good player in this league.

prisuta and missi
just said he is the offensive equivalent of dan mccullers. he is too nice.
greaaaaaaat.

But McCullers can't reach the QB
Thats a good thing when an OL makes it so others can’t get to the QB

If we didnt take an OL
MM would have nothing left to do

You have to think that they will sign a veteran at ILB after cuts on June 1st.
Wont know how good this draft is for a few years.

You all
Are a negative bunch. A lot of crying on this thread.

No offense to this guy
But this is garbage. We need something at lb.
Thank you salty btsc commentators who called this draft another lb day, Colbert was listening

Like … I’m really hoping up next is a Linebacker, because so far the ILB depth is not as good as it should, either in quality or quantity.

if mitchell can't coach mccullers. munchake cant coach this dude
being too nice is being too nice. you have to reach a point in your life where you change or you dont.
facts of life.

Been wanting an swing tackle as we do not have one on the roster. Would have preferred one in the fourth on a trade back.
He does have LT experience is a huge plus. Excited to learn more about the kid.
Bright spot in a dismal draft.
