The Ramen Burger is the latest food mash-up to draw a crowd
Move over, cronuts! New Yorkers are going crazy for Keizo Shimamoto’s Ramen Burger, a beef patty between two fried noodle patties that made its debut at Brooklyn’s Smorgasburg food fair on Aug. 3.

The Ramen Burger has taken New York by storm, leading some to wonder if it is the heir to the insanely popular cronut.

The cronut may have finally met it’s match.

On Aug. 3, hundreds of people lined up despite the rain in the hopes of sinking their teeth into one of Chef Keizo Shimamoto’s Ramen Burgers. Since there were only a mere 150 burgers at Brooklyn’s Smorgasburg food fair, many foodies were left without their prize.

“We love Ramen. We love Burgers. Therefore, we want you to love the Ramen Burger,” the official Ramen Burger Facebook page reads.

So what is the Ramen Burger, anyway? It’s a USDA prime beef patty cooked medium-rare to well-done and glazed with Shimamoto’s secret shoyu sauce that is sandwiched between two noodle buns. Scallions and arugula are also in the mix.

“It’s just so good,” Shimamoto, a ramen aficionado who spent time in Japan, told The Daily Beast. “The juices from the burger and the secret sauce, that shoyu flavor, come into your mouth, while your tongue separates the noodles. It’s a different experience from any other burger.”

Shimamoto has pictures of a couple different versions of the Ramen Burger on the food’s Facebook page, but the shoyu variety is the only one available at Smorgasburg.

Shimamoto said he started to turn his vision for the Ramen Burger into a reality when he moved to New York. Before long, his culinary creation made its celebrated debut at the Sun Noodle stand.

“I can't believe how fast news can travel. In just two days, the Ramen Burger went from dream to Internet superstar before I even sold a single one,” Shimamoto wrote on his blog, GoRamen.com, earlier this month.

Shimamoto promises there will be 300 Ramen Burgers ($8 each) at Smorgasburg on Saturday. And, given the cronut-like line from the last round, interested parties should be there long before the Sun Noodle booth opens at 11 a.m.
