Chicago, IL (BlackNews.com) - The New Negro Magazine will make its
print debut on October 15th. This bi-monthly magazine will be distributed in

The magazine is dedicated to identifying areas of self-improvement for
African-American men ages 25-54, who are head of households or
self-employed, in small and mid-size markets.

The magazine's major focus is to inform its audience about the issues
that have the potential to empower themselves and their communities in
three specific areas:

1) Improving Self Awareness,
2) Building Strong Families,
3) Shaping Public Policy, Image, and Opinions.

I thought I'd post this here considering the vast majority of you on this board are great at lending your thoughts and solutions to discussions concerning 'Us' and the world around us. I've seen an abundance of bright minds floating around this board and thought to bring this here. I would like to see some of you send your submission to these cats because this board is sitting on a gold-mine of knowledge that just seeps through the computer screen everytime I read some of your post. That's all I gotta say.

Shades

This isnt a joke is it? You know I would be willing to consider becoming a writer for this if it wasnt named "New Negro Magazine." Something about writing as a new negro that I just cant get my mind around...

I also don't like the name... Something about "New Negro" makes it sound like we want to return to being "Negroes".

Maybe that's better than the other N word, but why not "Black American" or something less 1940's. I would also not like "New Afro-American"

The idea and concept of the magazine is excellent.

The name is horrible. Ass backward. And needs to be changed immediately if you are serious about having it succeed.

The feedback on this board --- even though by a few people so far -- is 100 percent on point. If readers cannot get past the name, you will not be able to get them to go into their pockets and pay for a subscription to your publication, no matter how great the contents of the magazine might be. If advertisers cannot get past the name, they will spend their ad dollars elsewhere.

The word "negro" is a loaded term. In people's mind's it does not conjure images of progressiveness or forward thinking or change for the positive.

It conjures images of the segregated 1950s, jim crow laws, and black people being brutalized, tortured, hung, and sprayed with fire hoses in public.

So for short we will call it, "New Nigga" magazine? or "New Nig?"

Seriously, whoever thought of that name was not thinking at all. If you need to take time to explain the meaning of the title to people, that alone should tell you that the name you chose is a disaster.

Seriously, brother. I am not hating on your magazine or shitting on your idea. I am trying to help you, because I think a magazine like yours is needed.

But a basic law of marketing is this: the name is everything. If I were you, I would take the feedback on this board to heart. And most importantly -- take the feedback professionally, not personally -- and rename your publication immediately before launching it.

Is naming the publication the New Negro a turn towards clarifying
what seems to be an identity crisis (nggr, Negro, colored, Black, African
American) ???

I agree with your statement here, the name Negro has a stigma attatched to its time. But to clarify this is not my publication I just recieved this in a email and thought I'd bring it here for you guys to disect and send your comments to the mag and what you said right here is the kind of input they need.

I'm gonna tell you now, change the name of that shit cause I got pissed, just seeing and reading about it, not trying to be funny or harsh, but I can't even see a magazine with a name like next to Ebony, Black Enterprize, or Jet. We've already got a clothing line called State Property, and believe it or not there are plenty of bros out there rocking it, doin shit to make themselves literally State Property, it's almost like wearing an inmate number, but you're supposed to be in style with the shit.
