HBO's next fantasy series has a teaser trailer. Below is your first look at The Nevers, a Victorian-era fantasy series created by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

The story follows a group of "touched" people, mostly women, who have manifested powerful abilities — "some charming, some very disturbing."
More from the official description: "Among them are Amalia True (Laura Donnelly), a mysterious, quick-fisted widow, and Penance Adair (Ann Skelly), a brilliant young inventor. They are the champions of this new underclass, making a home for the Touched, while fighting the forces of… well, pretty much all the forces – to make room for those whom history as we know it has no place."

Whedon created the series, which was set to mark The Avengers director's return to television. But Whedon was announced as stepping down from the project in November and HBO tapped Philippa Goslett as the production's new showrunner and executive producer.
The Nevers was also originally commissioned for 10 episodes. Filming was interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, then resumed last fall and wrapped in October. HBO now says only six episodes will premiere on HBO and HBO Max in April and that Goslett is working on an unspecified number of future episodes to be released at a later date.

The sprawling ensemble cast also includes Olivia Williams, James Norton, Tom Riley, Rochelle Neil, Eleanor Tomlinson, Amy Manson, Pip Torrens, Denis O'Hare, Zackary Momoh, Elizabeth Berrington, Kiran Sawar, Anna Devlin, Viola Prettejohn, Ella Smith, Nick Frost, and Ben Chaplin.

Whedon wrote in a statement after his departure: "This year of unprecedented challenges has impacted my life and perspective in ways I could never have imagined, and while developing and producing The Nevers has been a joyful experience, I realize that the level of commitment required moving forward, combined with the physical challenges of making such a huge show during a global pandemic, is more than I can handle without the work beginning to suffer," "I am genuinely exhausted, and am stepping back to martial my energy towards my own life, which is also at the brink of exciting change. I am deeply proud of the work we have done; I'm grateful to all my extraordinary cast and collaborators, and to HBO for the opportunity to shape yet another strange world. The Nevers is a true labor of love, but after two-plus years of labor, love is about all I have to offer. It will never fade."

Film director Joss Whedon is no longer making his return to television as planned this summer. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Whedon has left HBO’s upcoming sci-fi drama series, The Nevers. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, a rep for HBO said, “We have parted ways with Joss Whedon. We remain excited about the future of The Nevers and look forward to its premiere in the summer of 2021.” Whedon is currently under investigation from Warner Bros. for alleged misconduct on the set of Justice League, where he replaced Zack Snyder as the director. Justice League actor Ray Fisher alleges Whedon engaged in “gross, abusive, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable” behavior while on set, and recently accused Whedon of digitally altering an actor’s skin color tone in post-production, which Whedon denies doing.

The Nevers was picked up by HBO for a straight to series order in July 2018, beating out other outlets including Netflix. The series is set to star Outlander’s Laura Connelly, who plays Amalia True, a “menace to Victorian” society leader of the group known as the Orphans that have “unusual abilities, relentless enemies and a mission that might change the world.” Whedon was supposed to write, direct, executive produce and serve as showrunner on The Nevers, which would have marked the director’s return to television after over a decade away since creating and executive produced Fox’s Dollhouse. Whedon issued a statement about his departure from the series:

“This year of unprecedented challenges has impacted my life and perspective in ways I could never have imagined, and while developing and producing The Nevers has been a joyful experience, I realize that the level of commitment required moving forward, combined with the physical challenges of making such a huge show during a global pandemic, is more than I can handle without the work beginning to suffer. I am genuinely exhausted, and am stepping back to martial my energy towards my own life, which is also at the brink of exciting change. I am deeply proud of the work we have done; I’m grateful to all my extraordinary cast and collaborators, and to HBO for the opportunity to shape yet another strange world. The Nevers is a true labor of love, but after two plus years of labor, love is about all I have to offer. It will never fade.”

Joss Whedon Scrubbed From The Nevers Marketing as Buffy Cast Speaks Out

HBO confirmed Joss Whedon won't be featured in the marketing for The Nevers.

The news comes on the heels of Charisma Carpenter alleging Whedon engaged in abusive behavior towards her on the sets of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. "When I read Charisma Carpenter's accounts, it was distressing," HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys told THR.

Whedon created The Nevers and served as showrunner before stepping down in November 2020, citing his physical exhaustion from making the series in the midst of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. "On The Nevers, he's left the show. You've seen his statement," Bloys noted. He went on to say Carpenter's allegation "hasn't really affected" the series' promotional campaign, pointing out that The Nevers' teaser trailer didn't mention Whedon. "Yes, you would expect to have that name [in marketing materials] but the show and the creative is going to speak for itself. A marketing campaign can only do so much; the show and the creative have to stand on its own."

Other Buffy cast members have lent their support to Carpenter, with Amber Benson writing, "Buffy was a toxic environment and it starts at the top. [Carpenter] is speaking truth and I support her 100%." Sarah Michelle Gellar also voiced her support for Carpenter, writing, "While I am proud to have my name associated with Buffy Summers, I don't want to be forever associated with the name Joss Whedon." Michelle Trachtenberg later thanked Gellar for her post before alleging Whedon behaved inappropriately towards her on the Buffy set.

Whedon has recently faced other allegations of misconduct and abuse on his film and television productions, beginning with claims from Justice League actor Ray Fisher which led to an investigation by WarnerMedia. The investigation concluded in December 2020, with WarnerMedia saying " remedial action has been taken." Fisher said he believed Whedon's departure from The Nevers was related to the investigation, adding, "I have no intention of allowing Joss Whedon to use the old Hollywood tactic of 'exiting', 'stepping down', or 'walking away' to cover for his terrible behavior."

Created by Joss Whedon, The Nevers stars Laura Donnelly, Olivia Williams, James Norton, Tom Riley, Ann Skelly, Ben Chaplin, Pip Torrens, Zackary Momoh, Amy Manson, Nick Frost, Rochelle Neil, Eleanor Tomlinson and Denis O’Hare. The series premieres April 11 on HBO.

Either someone went back and reedited the hell out this show

Or Joss really lost all his MOJO

This sh*t don't make no type of sense.

There are a very few classic Joss moments of crazy, smart dialogue, unexpected twists...

But this is all over the place.

Too much stuff is happening for it to feel like nothing is happening.

Now every one not one knows the giant glowing egg exists but what it's called and who it belongs too? When the hell did that happen

The Maladie triple switch??? Wtf???

There is a dope show buried beneath all this sh*t

I'm a Joss fan from day one so on the real

aint no surprise I KNEW this was coming cause that his signature.

When they were able to translate the siren song a few episodes back and said I was left behind?

I knew immediately Molly was an alien solider left behind during a mission and it would all tie together to how all the touched got their powers (Buffy) and (Molly) was a "good one" Angel and Maladie was someone she betrayed (Drue) and the English lords were Wolfram & Hart and the aliens were in a war (Firefly) and Molly was creating an army of the touched (Dollhouse) ec etc...

You saved me some hours. I started watching this show and I had to get ready for work so I only got halfway through an episode. Not going to finish

I think its a good exercise IF YOU HAVE TIME

I watch certain things now just for learning structure

Structurally this whole thing is a MESS

but the bible is solid as f*ck (basically because its using all his old IP)

but this WORLD? Is incredible and hate Joss all they want no one does world building in a short time like him

You GOT the feel tone structure everything real fast

It looks INCREDIBLE wonderful casting nice budget the fight scenes are like ballet.

but the story line and editing is trash. Its confusing and haphazard and you CANNOT due that on THIS budget with THIS theme

just doesn't work.

but again the casting is great. And when the NEW writers come on?

This could be dope as f*ckl

or a complete sh*tshow.

The last 2 episodes some sanity is finally in the writing room editing room

Nice touch how Molly gear that the genius Irish girl built for in the tunnels are the obvious ancestors of the gear the future PNC have.
