The Final Cut - Do You Want Your Memories Known?

I saw the film The Final Cut, starring Robin Williams on IFC today. While the film was not great, the premise is not bad. Full Wikipedia link is below, but essentially, in the movie parents have the ability to implant a "Zoe Implant", which will record the entire experiences during their child's lifespan from their POV. Williams plays a "cutter", a person who edits and creates a "Rememory" or movie of the person's life after they have died.

One of the subplots involved a group of protesters who believed the process to be wrong, that "cutters" could edit a terrible person's history/life to be seemingly good. I saw no basis in this argument, as it is essentially what happens now at wakes and funerals anyway, even persons known to have been "bad" in their lifetime are generally not spoken of in overtly negative terms.

My question however is, how would you feel, if it was possible, that someone (spouse, lover, family, whomever) could potentially have access to EVERYTHING that you did during your lifetime? Would you be ashamed of some of the things they would see? Would you want to see the lifetime of someone else?

I personally would not want my memories recorded... and on the bullshitting at funerals... yup pure lies a lot of the time... I have only one time where the reverend spoke the truth... he started off saying "i'm sorry but brother ronnie did not make it (in to heaven"... thing was no one complained...

I would not want my memories recorded. . .

My thoughts are often inappropriate or mean.. ..

I would not want those things out in the open. .

Having your thoughts or your memories read or revealed is possibly the scariest idea imaginable. Anyone who has read George Orwell's 1984 knows what I'm talking about. If you haven't read the book, rent the movie.

Warning the movie is not a fun movie to watch but it is thought provoking. When the government ask you how much is 1 + 1 your answer better be 3.

I haven't see "The Final Cut" but now I want to see it.

That's one of my favorite books since I was a kid. I also like Animal Farm. The American government is like the pigs to me. Everybody is equal. Some are more equal than others. I didn't know there was a movie?

I agree. It was required reading when I was in school, I hope that it still is, but is a great read nonetheless, I need to read it again.

Not to play "spoiler" (but I did already if you read the wiki-article), but the movie could have been much better and deeper. There were so many other areas that could have been explored besides the weak main plot surrounding Robin Williams.

Maybe I had zoned out by that point, but I do not think it was ever fully explored who had rights to the memories of a person after they died.

One issue that should have been explored more was that the "cutter" saw the entire life of the person while making the movie. Does the cutter have an obligation to report any crimes/misdeeds done by the person during their life? Does the government/police have access to the memories? What if the person was murdered, or witnessed a crime?

Not to be all Big Brother-Minority Report-Patriot Act on everyone, but it's a topic that fascinates me.

Yes, it was filmed a couple of times. I think once in the 50s-60s (British film), though the most known/notable version was one actually done in 1984 (US Version). It was not well received and I mainly remember it as being dark, gloomy, dull, and featuring music from Annie Lennox/Eurythmics.

I see. I like everything by Orwell. He shows how far things can go with unchecked and unquestioned power. I might look for those films.

LOL! Hey, I never claimed to be one. People just assume and I don't correct them :D

Everybody knows the angels are the ones you have to watch!!!

I would want my memories recorded just for my my own personal veiwing though. It would be interesting I think, I'm into reminiscing anyway.

i wouldnt mind my friends and family have some type of access to my memories

i think it would be interesting to go back and access ancestors'and family members who have died memories to learn more about them

everyone has their skeletons...ive never been really scared or ashamed to owned up to what i did....regardless of scandalous it was...i am who i am

i guess i see the benefit outweights all my dirty little secrets

Some shit is better left unsaid & unseen...

I agree..

Most things I've done, I have no shame over, however I don't go boasting and bragging about them to everyone. So for them to be public record would be wrong and not to me as a deceased person justice..

Things I've THOUGHT about doing.. well.. that's another story and I'm going to have to go with a resounding NO!

As of right now I say no. But I hope to lead a life where my answer will change to yes. I am still working out my kinks in life but I do not feel as though I have done anything that I would be horrified about people knowing. Hopefully when it is my time to go and I have led a just life as I plan then I wouldn't have a problem with it.

As far as seeing someone else's hell yeah I would love to. No matter how much dirt they had done or how much pain it could potentially cost me. I love to see people in the raw. So an opportunity to see someone without their mask on I would jump all over.

Great Thread and 1984(The novel) was the shit btw
