Waco, Texas—Texas House Democratic Leader Jim Dunnam announced today his strong endorsement of Senator Barack Obama's candidacy for President of the United States. Dunnam released the following statement:

"It gives me great pride to endorse Barack Obama for President. The constituents I serve, and all the people of Texas, are tired of politics as usual. In Texas -- and across the rest of the country -- we want a president who will finally put doing what is right above corporate special interests and radical partisan agendas. We want change we can believe in, not the same old Washington-style promises made and promises broken.

"Texas House Democrats are fighting hard to improve our public schools and bring health coverage to the uninsured. With Barack Obama as president, we will have a remarkable ally in achieving those vital goals and many more."

Texas State Representative Jim Dunnam first rose to national prominence after leading Texas House Democrats' historic trip to Ardmore, Oklahoma to block Tom DeLay's illegal redistricting scheme in 2003. Since then, Dunnam has been a leader in the fight to improve Texas' public schools and to fully fund the Children's Health Insurance Program. In 2007, Dunnam helped lead a bipartisan majority of Texas House Members who stood up to Speaker Tom Craddick's ultra-partisan, divisive rule and claims of "absolute" authority over the House. Prior to his endorsement of Barack Obama, Dunnam had endorsed former Sen. John Edwards for the Democratic nomination in 2008.
