A Massachusetts teen who participated in a spicy tortilla chip challenge on social media died from ingesting a high amount of a chili pepper extract, according to an autopsy report obtained by The Associated Press.
Harris Wolobah, a 10th grader from the city of Worcester, died on Sept. 1, 2023, after eating the chip. He was found unresponsive by police who were called to his home, and brought to a hospital, where he died.

The cause of death was listed as cardiopulmonary arrest “in the setting of recent ingestion of food substance with high capsaicin concentration.”

The 14-year-old boy also had an enlarged heart and a congenital heart defect, according to the report, the findings of which were shared with the AP in an email from Elaine Driscoll, a spokesperson for the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.

Condolences to the family

It's very important for children to be aware if they have medical conditions like this - if we are considering that the boy was unaware.

That heat level would definitely trigger his heart. And this was completely avoidable.

Well, I bet he won't do that again. Wait...

While it's fucking horrible that he died from doing that dumb shit. I hope many others learn a lesson about doing reckless shit just to prove they are indeed a part of the many retarded people already out here. Like the fool who jumped off a ship at night because his parents were bitching him out. Or the fool who jumped off a cruise ship as a dare. Or the fools who pour flammable liquid all over their bare skin and light themselves on fire. Every generation has it's set of marvelous fucking idiots who live on as reminders of consequences for not thinking things all the way through. From time to time when I was a child I would hear stories of those who made bad choices. Now I tell my children about the marvelous idiots who they must never be like.

As someone who survived doing a similar challenge(although it was just one plain tortilla chip doused with ghost pepper puree) i can tell you that is no joke.. :smh:

Bro as much as I love Scotch Bonnet peppers and the mega hot pepper sauces we make from them. I would never do that pepper challenge. It's just too abusive to the body for me to make any sense of people doing it.

Some things aren't for me, and violently

spicy food and peppers are two of them.

I'm not up for the challenge.

As much as I love spicy food I don't care for or want food that is violently spicy from pepper. It's just overkill.
