Alright, here is the deal. I need a receiver to get surround sound from the hook up that is already here at the house, but I am also looking for a new Samsung UN55C6500/7000/8000 HDTV.

Here is my set up. These speakers were here when I moved in. I have no idea what kind of speakers are in there, but all of the wiring is behind the entertainment center (wires shown below). Some receivers are set up for wires with no tips on them, or free wires where you put half in the red slot/half in the black and it works. My wires have the ends on them and I would rather not split them.

Should I get the receiver or should I just buy a whole new Surround Set up because I am seriously considering one of the TV's below. Which one is the better deal?

Re: Tech Heads: Is this a good deal for a Onkyo Receiver? Also, ??? about LED Tv's +P

I hate ceiling speakers unless you are trying to play department store music on them.

The first thing you should do is see where all those RCA cables go to. Which means you have to take the speakers down and see whats going on behind them. Also, for all you know some of those RCA'a could be wired to CCTV or other tv's in the house.

I count 11 which dont add up to an even number for speakers.

Take a good look at what you have in the house before buying any equipment.

I dropped over a 1,000 duckets for my Onkyo receiver. My speakers ran about another 1,000 bucks. The HDMI pass through is the shit. Does this one come with the universal remote???

Click on the second link Dray and that has a picture of the remote. What I want to know is this wort it with the set up that I have planned. Even if I have to buy new speakers, is it worth it?The price goes up almost $200 tomorrow.

I just picked up the receiver, it will probably be here on Tuesday-Wednesday. I'll ask the question about the TV later

Re: Tech Heads: Is this a good deal for a Onkyo Receiver? Also, ??? about LED Tv's +P

Okay this is the lower ranged one. The one I have has the remote with the macros and shit. Remotes the size of my forearm. I actually bought this one from Fryes for my Dads birthday, He saw what I had and wanted the same system (but I wasn't going to drop a G on his shit) so we got the cheaper one.

You'll be okay with this one, the one at my dads home is pretty good. A receiver is the cornerstone of a home theater man.

I never could understand how I someone could have a 46 inch flat screen with a blu ray player and play the movies from the TV speakers...

Have fun bro.

What do you think about the TV's. I don't know anybody who has every ordered from Abe's of Maine, but their deals are hard to beat with the tax free AND free shipping. I want to have this by the time football season gets here. If you were picking, which TV would you bet on and why.

The one I have is a Philips 60" rear projection HD-Ready dinosaur that I got in 2004. I was happy with it then, but I want a TV that 3 years from now I will STILL be happy with, you dig? I'm not one for keeping up with the joneses, so I ain't looking to jump up and buy new shit every year just because. I want a TV that will last a while.

Re: Tech Heads: Is this a good deal for a Onkyo Receiver? Also, ??? about LED Tv's +P

As with everything,it depends how much of an AV nut you are...me,I'm pretty nuts.
So I would rip it all out and start fresh, but for normal people...

Looking at the cables, they look rather generic...and basic, which will work...

The yellow ones are obviously video, which is why there is an odd number.
The others are speaker cables???...those with the RCA plugs on the end???.I have never cut those...if you are thinking that the RCA should go directly to the back of the receiver.
I guess you could....

The receiver you are buying should be fine...don't think there would be much chance of it blowing the speakers.

Happy hunting...

Well I have two Bravias and one Samsung. Both of them (Sony) are 120HZ I bought them prolly 2 years (maybe) ago. So far they are still going strong.

Re: Tech Heads: Is this a good deal for a Onkyo Receiver? Also, ??? about LED Tv's +P

I don't even know what I am looking at or looking for.

your picture contains RCA cables typically used for video and audio between tv's, receivers, and other components. Red and white are usually audio and yellow is usually video....it really doesnt matter as long as whatever is plugged into one end is the same on the other...e.g. video out on one device to video end on another device. in that picture, some of the cables have labels on them but you didnt show enough of them for us to see what they say. this is important before you CUT ANYTHING. like in my previous post, you dont know where those wires go to. most speakers out there use straight copper audio wire (aka speaker wire) to make their connections which i dont see in the picture. even if the speakers in the house dont use copper wire and have RCA connections on them you still may need to pull a speaker from the wall/ceiling to see how its connected or if its connected at all.

even if each speaker used one white and one red in your picture that still leaves you with 3 yellow RCA cables to account for.

walk around your house and look for blank wall plates where something might have been....or outside where something might have been. before you cut anything only to have to fix it cause you need it, find out where they all go to
