His friend issued a statement saying he was gravely ill due to brain cancer on 4/10 and didn't have long to live.

He died this morning at age 52.. RIP

Former Syracuse great Dwayne "Pearl" Washington has died, according to his family.

Syracuse announced Washington's death in a news release.

Washington was diagnosed with a brain tumor last summer. He had surgery in the fall.

Washington was born on January 6, 1964 and grew up in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, NY. At a young age, he displayed such skill on the court that locals dubbed him "The Pearl" because his game resembled that of NBA great Earl "The Pearl" Monroe.

Washington excelled at Boys and Girls High School in Brooklyn and he was the nation's most sought-after recruit in 1983. When Washington, a point guard, committed to Syracuse, coach Jim Boeheim said the program was changed forever.

I really liked watching him in college, and I will never forget that time Patrick Ewing threw a punch @ him that would've knocked him to half court had it connected.

A sad day for 'Cuse fans. Pearl was a great player on the court and a humble, genuine guy off the court. Truly one of the good guys. R.I.P.

Dam. He was barely in his 50s!!! Had no idea he was sick. .

All time Big East great when the Big East was the Big East!!!

RIP brother.

I really liked watching him in college, and I will never forget that time Patrick Ewing threw a punch @ him that would've knocked him to half court had it connected.

March 8, 1985: Washington punches Georgetown star Patrick Ewing in the stomach early in a 74-65 loss to the Hoyas in the Big East tournament semifinals. Ewing retaliated with a right hand and the benches emptied.

A year after emotions ran high in the 1984 Big East Tournament, Syracuse and Georgetown met once again at Madison Square Garden in '85, with the defending champion Hoyas looking to send a message to the rest of the country. Patrick Ewing and Pearl Washington were running downcourt when Ewing caught Pearl with an elbow to the ribs. Pearl returned the favor shortly later with an elbow to the gut. An enraged Ewing responded with a haymaker that barely missed Washington. "Dwayne was just lucky that he ducked,’’ Syracuse’s Howard Triche said. "I don’t know if he saw it coming or it was just instinct, but he’s lucky he ducked out of the way or he’d have no head.’’
