Man this shit had me shain my head reading it.

On one hand I was happy that something like that could be done.

Then on the other im like... You fucks created a Black hole ON THE EARTH???

Yeah yeah as a amateur scientist i'm aware of the "SAFETY" of Science i'm also aware that Science Fails.. ALOT during Theoretical experiments.

oh well read on.

Researchers at St. Andrews University, Scotland, claim to have found a way to simulate an event horizon of a black hole - not through a new cosmic observation technique, and not by a high powered supercomputer… but in the laboratory. Using lasers, a length of optical fiber and depending on some bizarre quantum mechanics, a "singularity" may be created to alter a laser's wavelength, synthesizing the effects of an event horizon. If this experiment can produce an event horizon, the theoretical phenomenon of Hawking Radiation may be tested, perhaps giving Stephen Hawking the best chance yet of winning the Nobel Prize.

Sucked into a microscopic black hole
You will need: a microscopic black hole. Note that black holes are not eternal, they evaporate due to Hawking radiation. For your average black hole this takes an unimaginable amount of time, but for really small ones it could happen almost instantaneously, as evaporation time is dependent on mass. Therefore you microscopic black hole must have greater than a certain threshold mass, roughly equal to the mass of Mount Everest. Creating a microscopic black hole is tricky, since one needs a reasonable amount of neutronium, but may possibly be achievable by jamming large numbers of atomic nuclei together until they stick. This is left as an exercise to the reader.

Method: simply place your black hole on the surface of the Earth and wait. Black holes are of such high density that they pass through ordinary matter like a stone through the air. The black hole will plummet through the ground, eating its way to the center of the Earth and all the way through to the other side: then, it'll oscillate back, over and over like a matter-absorbing pendulum. Eventually it will come to rest at the core, having absorbed enough matter to slow it down. Then you just need to wait, while it sits and consumes matter until the whole Earth is gone.

Highly, highly unlikely. But not impossible.

Earth's final resting place: a singularity of almost zero size, which will then proceed to happily orbit the Sun as normal.

Source: "The Dark Side Of The Sun," by Terry Pratchett. It is true that the microscopic black hole idea is an age-old science fiction mainstay which predates Pratchett by a long time, he was my original source for the idea, so that's what I'm putting.

yup... Remeber watchin this on Discovery Channel last year.

Creating kids without men

Creating artificial quantum singularities

Just waiting for them to fuck with black matter or anti-matter and blow a big chunk of this planet up

What pisses me off it that its not being done here

We need to pour some money in getting the US back on top in science or math, or our asses will be left behind

Crazy...I wonder where it lead to...?

I'm just guessing ...

I understand wanting to study a Black hole.. but to create an Event Horizon on the ONLY planet our species is living on is retarded.

If we had moon or Martian Colonies or Bases, fine, even then it would be iffy.
But we cannot escape it if something goes terribly wrong.

So the method they are using.. to say it's 100% safe is fallacy. We've never dealt with a Black Hole before so we dont know any 100% guaranteed safety guards.

oh well, If it aint nukes..somethings gotta kill us I guess.

Who do they think is reading this? Jesus Christ?

Why would you even be interested in this shit? Unless, you were planning to sell this to the highest bidder and form some type of controllable weapon to annihilate your enemies and then "evaporate the hole" remotely.

Cool hope they don't step it up and kill us all.....I thought I remembered hearing you can extract anti-matter from a black hole theoretically and it if harnessed it could be a infinite source of energy.....maybe it was sci-fi.

Tower of Babble or Tower of Babel.

Which by the way Bab-El means the Lord's Gate or Gateway of the Gods.

Oh yeah, ya'll are reaching here a bit. This is a "simulated" event horizon, not an actual event horizon and has no gravitational effects like a real event horizon or black hole. They are using lazers and the property of light to travel in "wave forms" and at differnt speeds to simulate an event horizon like effect. No real danger here. Might even help actually.

I know you remeber this thread dog . . .

http://www.bgol.us/board/showthread.php?t=212150

But when I read this title and article, all I could think of, was . . .

Event Horizon. Not fun. :smh:

Yep.. It may be simulated. But many times it means it's already being financed by some governments military. 95% of all technology, comes from some form of Military research, whether it's based in Science or Agriculture.

The only thing not invented by the military.. was cellphones.. They stole that from Star Trek.:lol::lol:

Yep dats wut Doc Bruce Banner thought...

oops my bad dat wuz science fiction!!!:D

Dear Scientist,

Please stop fucking around with and developing Black Holes on Earth. I rather enjoy this planet, and until we can colonize Mars and the Moon, it's the only place I can call home.
Not to mention, I don't want to go out by having my head and body sucked through my asshole and back out my mouth while my body is suspended in time as its being pulled into a billion microscopic atoms.

Thank you,
Heist.

Co Sign this..

I think this is a great idea

If we destroy ourselves, none of the other life forms in the universe have to take time and energy out of their progressive lives to put us out of our misery.

cheers all around
