for the Middleweight Title

Gegard Mousasi Defends His Light Heavyweight Title Against

Undefeated “King Mo” Lawal

STRIKEFORCE Champion Gilbert Melendez to Square Off Against DREAM Champion Shinya Aoki For Lightweight Title

CBS SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS and STRIKEFORCE mixed martial arts (MMA) return to network primetime television with a world-class lineup featuring three title fights and five of the top MMA fighters in the world from their respective weight classes, on Saturday, April 17 (9:00 PM, ET/delayed PT) on the CBS Television Network. The event will be broadcast live from Bridgestone Arena (formerly known as Sommet Center) in Nashville, Tenn.

Dan Henderson (25-7-0), one of the most decorated fighters in MMA history, makes his STRIKEFORCE debut in the evening’s main event against champion Jake Shields (24-4-1) as the two battle for the STRIKEFORCE Middleweight Title. Both Shields and Henderson are ranked as two of the top five middleweights in the world.

This event also marks the first time Henderson, who left the UFC and signed a four-fight deal with STRIKEFORCE in December 2009, will fight in front of a network primetime audience. A two-time United States Olympic wrestling team member (1992, 1996), Henderson is also the only fighter in the sport’s history to simultaneously hold two different titles in two different weight classes (welterweight and heavyweight) for a major fight promotion (PRIDE Fighting Championships).

“We are excited about returning to CBS Primetime with a card featuring some of the top mixed martial arts fighters in the world, including three title fights and the STRIKEFORCE debut of MMA legend, Dan Henderson,” said Scott Coker, Founder and CEO of STRIKEFORCE. “CBS has shown a tremendous commitment to furthering the sport of MMA on network television and we appreciate the home they have given STRIKEFORCE to deliver world class cards for MMA fans everywhere.”

In addition to the main event championship bout, the night will also include two additional championship title fights. Gegard Mousasi (27-2-1), arguably the sport’s top light heavyweight, will face undefeated King Mo (6-0) for the STRIKEFORCE Light Heavyweight title. STRIKEFORCE champion Gilbert Melendez (17-2-0) puts his lightweight title on the line against DREAM lightweight champion Shinya Aoki (23-4-0) in the evening’s third title bout.

“When you have one event with three championship fights and this many top-ranked athletes, it’s more than just a great card, it’s a big night for MMA,” said Kelly Kahl, Senior Executive Vice President, Primetime, CBS Television. “Audiences are going to see a great range of mixed martial arts skills, styles and talent on one broadcast.”

Last November’s CBS SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS, headlined by Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers, averaged 4.04m viewers, winning its time period among adults 18-34 and men 18-34, and delivering ratings significantly higher than the Network’s season-to-date averages in the time period among young adult and male demos. The ratings include a 1.8/06 in adults 18-49, 1.8/07 in adults 18-34, 2.6/07 in men 25-54, 2.5/08 in men 18-49 and 2.3/09 in men 18-34. The broadcast’s main event attracted 5.46 million viewers.

SHOWTIME Sports will produce the broadcast with host Gus Johnson calling the action and MMA legend Frank Shamrock and Mauro Ranallo serving as color analysts.

This looks real good. I hope Jake Shields submits Hendo and REALLY looking forward to the Moussassi fight. Show and prove time for KIng Mo.

Gonna pick Gegard by decision.

Gegard has to be one of the most exciting fighters out there these days, amazes me how he stays so calm and still manages to beat so much ass!

I think Shields will get exposed as a mid-level fighter who was in the right place at the right time, to obtain the belt in an underdeveloped fighting organization. Strikeforce has added ALOT of talent over the past year so guys like him and Kung Le were not going to have a hold of those belts for very long. But hey, he COULD beat Hendo....:smh:

:confused::confused::confused:

He's been unbeaten for te past 5 years or so

Tough test for Jake.He has been undefeated for years but most of those fights were at 170.Winning this fight will be huge for him.

thnx for the heads up, these guys need to promote more cuz i didnt hear anything abou tthis

Yes - no problem, bro. Should be a great card. 3 title fights ... and they air their stuff every 3 - 4 months or so. Put a pvr/dvr/Tivo recording on Sat' night for STRIKEFORCE. Usually put it on for 2.5 - 3 hours as the shows usually run over. They usually peg it for 2 hours in the menu guide, but the fights usually run over. Enjoy

Strikeforce is definitely putting up exciting cards. I'm more excited to see this than any of recent UFC cards. Mo is in for a real test Gegard Mousasi is the real deal, I've been on his bandwagon for awhile.

COUNTDOWN TO WEC 48 is gonna air on Spike on Wednesday, the 21st (airdate for TUF 11 - episode 4 as well) ... and according to Rogan's twitter - him and Mike Goldberg are doing the commentary for that PPV. Also - Spike TV is airing 2 of the prelims Saturday evening before the PPV/

I didn't know they we're doing a countdown, thanks for the heads up. There's no way Faber beats Aldo, he is on an Anderson Silva level with his striking. That Cerrone / Henderson rematch is guaranteed to be good, both very exciting fighters. Damn good card.

Yeah - Faber's against got the Sactown crowd behind him - but ALDO is a beast. A true beast. Love watching him fight ... he's vicious. Should be a great battle. Hopefully it isn't a quick finish. I want to see it go 2 - 3 rounds at least ... but Jose Aldo ... watch out ... he finishes stuff pretty quickly :lol:

Yes - Cerrone/Henderson II should be dope. They've got respect for one another - and their fight last year went 25 mins and was great.

Yeah - the first time they're doing a WEC COUNTDOWN. WEC being the sister company to the UFC ... and also it being their first-ever PPV (all their other events have been on VERSUS NETWORK and TSN2 and TSN in Canada). So they're charging $44.95 for this PPV ... but don't worry ... for those who can't catch it - I'm gonna get the links up in the days following, as will Johniz I'm sure ... I might watch it online or catch it with the homies. Not sure yet. Hopefully gonna watch Strikeforce with my boys this coming Saturday here.

Aldo is a beast.

One of my favourite fighters in the WEC.

JOSE ALDO ......

He's got a soccer background. Watch his kicks - damn! He throws heavy as well.

Aldo will next get a shot at the WEC Featherweight Championship against current title holder Mike Thomas Brown on November 18, 2009 at WEC 44 Aldo is on an eight fight win streak.[3]

Jose Aldo da Silva Oliveira Junior (born September 9, 1986) is a Brazilian mixed martial arts fighter. He currently fights as a featherweight in the World Extreme Cagefighting promotion. He is currently ranked the #5 featherweight in the world by MMA Weekly and #6 by Sherdog.[1] Although he has a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, he is making his name as a striker with all five of his WEC fights ending victoriously by knockout or technical knockout.[2] Aldo fights out of the Nova Uniao camp along with notable fighters, Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro, Wagnney Fabiano, and former UFC middleweight contender Thales Leites.

Aldo might kill Faber.

I feel that Dan Henderson is one of the toughest dudes in his weight division. I believe he will beat Jake Shields. Hendo has fought and hung with some of the best like W. Silva, A. Silva, Vitor Belfort, the Nogueiras, Bisping, Quinton Jackson, Rich Franklin. Who has Jake Shields beaten that's worthy of the ones I mentioned? If Dan did not beat them, he sure gave them a fight. I see Hendo winning.

I wanted Mo to beat Mussoui but that nigga is cocky. That shit is a turn off to me. Black fighters tend to be the most cocky fighters. I don't like cocky people. Mussoui is more humble. I see the same shit happening that happened with Rashad Evans and Machida. The same shit...a cocky niggas getting KTFO!!!!

ITS BEEN A GOOD MONTH OR SO FOR MMA FANS, ALOT OF EVENTS IN A SHORT TIME PERIOD:dance:

Got it really on the DVR in case I miss it, can't wait. Wish WEC didn't go pay per view but I will be watching Aldo take it to the next level once again on Faber even though I like Faber too.

Yeah - I think/hope it's just a trial basis. This is their first PPV and they've been showing events for years now ... and according to the numbers their viewership (even free on Versus network) isn't that strong. I think I remember reading they only got some 300,000 + for their last event aired on cable tv, and many say that's because DirecTV used to have Versus network offered on all/most of their packages, but not so much anymore ... but you'd think they'd have bigger numbers and all considering they have legit fighters and put on great 135 - 155lb fight cards and all ...

While Shields' resume is NO WHERE near as deep as Henderson's, he's been beating quality guys for years now, mainly Okami and Condit as well as Daley. ALL fighters the UFC has/is marketing AFTER their losses to Shields.

Ever notice on TUF 11 that Sheilds is one of Liddells assistant coaches? They have never even mentioned his name on that show. I guess Dana doesn't want to give Strikeforce any more exposure than they already have.

Will have the DVR set since i'm going to watch my coach fight tomorrow night at Wild Bill's

Yes - I noticed that as well. Surprised they haven't mentioned his name either ... hell ... you hardly ever see him on camera either. I forget when they filmed this season. Usually it's about 3 - 4 months before the season starts airing on SPIKE TV. Like with TUF 10 in 2009 ... casting was on June 1st, 2009 and the season ran from September - December, 2009.

mannn.......:smh:

what he did to cub swanson was ridiculous. if you were playing your homeboy in video games & you did some shyt like that to him he would accuse you of putting in a cheat code

Absolutely ... I showed my dad the clip (he doesn't follow MMA) and he said to me - "What the hell? You'd think his camp would have warned him about the guy's knees and kicks. Why the fuck did he try that on Aldo? He must have known Jose was gunning to knock his head off????!!!!"

Good shit, bro. I'm gonna pvr it tomorrow as well ... and see if I can catch it live. Good luck to your coach on his bout too ^

I haven't' seen anybody mention the Shinya Aoki vs Gelbert Melendez fight. Aoki is sick with the submissions and rubber guard. I can see him finishing the day quickly for melendez, at the same time I can see him getting KTFO since his chin is suspect. I see melendez taking him down and trying to quickly pound his ass out. If he can't he will risk getting caught and subbed quickly.

King Mo Vs Mousasi. Mousasi hasn't dealt with a high level wrestler like mo before. So this will be interesting. Does he has a good guard, can I can imagine he will spend a lot of time on his back. With that being said has king mo dealt with people who are good of there back. I know he was training with the Nog brothers some time ago, but I don't know if he kept it up. If he has he can take top position and pound him out. If he hasn't he might get swept and tapped.

Yes - both should be great fights as well ... STRIKEFORCE always puts on solid cards. I'm impressed with them and I'm glad that the UFC/STRIKEFORCE/BELLATOR/WEC are providing us fans with good action ... thank God ELITE XC is gone!!!!!!!!!!!
