The Facts:
After being in development since 1999, Get Smart The Movie started filming March 21, 2007 and is scheduled to be released June 20, 2008. It will star Steve Carell as Max, Anne Hathaway as 99, and be directed by Peter Segal. Alan Arkin will be playing The Chief, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will be playing Agent 23, and Terence Stamp will be playing Siegfried, with Ken Davitan as the faithful Shtarker. Masi Oka and Nate Torrence play Max's nerdy analyst friends Bruce and Lloyd. David Koechner plays Larabee, Terry Crews plays Agent 91, and The Great Khali will be playing the giant. The film will be shot in LA, Montreal, and Washington, D.C. There will also be a couple of very interesting cameos in the film, though Barbara Feldon will NOT be one of them. I don't know why Ms. Feldon turned down a cameo, though the horribly negative things the director said about her portrayal of 99 could certainly be a factor. I think Tom Selleck, when asked to do a cameo in an upcoming Magnum, PI movie, expressed how a lot of "original actors" feel about cameos in remakes - "I tell you what worries me - because I love Magnum and we have loyal fans - is they take these TV show titles, and they buy them and they spend $100 million on special effects, and then they make fun of them and trivialize it. Then they try and get the actor who used to be in it to do some ridiculous cameo to prove to the audience that it's OK. And I will not do that."
What's this I hear about Mel Brooks and Buck Henry being ignored by the movie's producers?
As regular readers of this website know, I have been lambasting the creative team of this movie for completely ignoring Mel Brooks, Buck Henry, and Leonard Stern in their work on this movie. This fact generated enormous outrage from the readers of this website and the initial press release on the movie was met with near-universal scorn both by fans and industry commentators because of their ridiculous take on the show and their ignoring of Brooks, Henry and Stern. Then, Jeffrey Wells of Hollywood Elsewhere released a bombshell - the reason why Brooks and Henry were being ignored was because the studio was taking legal action to have Brooks and Henry's names removed as the creators of Get Smart. The universally negative reaction to such shabby treatment caused a rapid about-face and now that legal fight has been dropped and Brooks and Henry will be receiving their earned credit as creators of Get Smart and an additional credit as consultants to the movie. In addition, there has also been some very positive contact made with Leonard Stern (see below), who has shepherded Get Smart through all of its incantations. It is fantastic to finally see the right thing being done and respect being paid to the original version and the tremendously talented people responsible for it. Unfortunately, their involvement is not major, but you wouldn't really expect that with a sequel. It's a shame that a ridiculous legal fight to increase the studio's profits stood in the way of allowing Stern, Brooks, and Henry the chance to consult before shooting started and the major characterizations and plot points were established. All 10,000+ of you who signed my petition that you were unhappy with the movie's treatment of the original creative team should be proud because you helped create this consultancy.
