A Black woman in Maryland told TODAY.com that a Starbucks barista wrote "monkey" on her frappuccino order.
Monique Pugh's Annapolis Starbucks run started like any other, she told TODAY.
"The lady at the register asked my name and I told her, and that was it," Pugh told the outlet. But when her order was ready, she said a barista read the order out loud, rather than saying the name written on the cup.
"I can see from a distance, a barista picks up (my) drink and she looks at it weird, says 'venti caramel Frap' and backed away," Pugh said.

When she picked up the cup, the word 'monkey,' an anti-Black slur, was written on the cup.
"My heart just drops," she says. "It was one of those in-the-moment things where your heart just drops and you're just like, 'What?'"
Pugh said she approached one of the baristas, not the one who took her initial order, about her drink and was met with a hostile attitude. On top of the word being written on her cup, she claimed that her drink order was also incorrect.
"He and I were going back and forth about whether the drink was made correctly, and then I had to stop myself and realized 'monkey' was written on my cup," she said.

"Why am I the only Black person in the store and 'monkey' is written on my cup?" Pugh questioned, according to the outlet.
Pugh added that the incident and response were "so triggering."
"Customers were looking at me and I was just embarrassed," she added.
In an email from Starbucks, forwarded to TODAY, a representative told Pugh that the company had conducted an investigation and found that the barista "mistakenly" labeled the cup with the word "monkey."

"Regardless, I understand the hurt and frustration this has caused you," the representative wrote. "We can do better. As an immediate step, I have taken action with the employee and have addressed their behavior with them directly."

The representative said the incident will prompt a couple of changes, including barring the word "monkey" from being used on drink tickets and more employee training, TODAY added. The outlet reported that the employee that took down Pugh's order was suspended.

"With these steps in place, I feel confident that we will do better and offer the warm and welcoming experience that you and all other customers expect from any of our locations in the future," the representative continued. "While I know none of this will be able to take away the hurt you may have felt that day and the days following, I hope that our actions show that we take this very seriously and value what you have shared."

Pugh doesn't think the response and changes go far enough.
"And to have them apologize, but then say it was an honest mistake and a labeling error? How was that a labeling error?" she asks. "I was the only Black person in the store. And I bring it to your attention and your first thought is to argue with me?"

Pugh and Starbucks did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (7News) — A Maryland Starbucks employee has been suspended after the word "monkey" was reportedly printed as the name on a customer's drink label, 7News learned on Thursday.
The incident happened on Nov. 19 at a Starbucks store in Annapolis Mall.
"A barista picks up a cup, looks at it and she's hesitant, and she says, 'venti caramel Frap,' and she puts it down and backs away from the table," Monique Pugh told 7News' Carl Willis. "Then, I see 'Monkey' on the cup."
Pugh said she was the only Black woman in the shop and that the time printed on the label lined up with her order.

All of the workers at the store are employed by licensed owner Impeccable Brands, a representative of which sent 7News the following statement:
"As a licensee of Starbucks, we are committed to upholding the mission and values of the Starbucks brand in our customer interactions and business operations. We are aware of the regrettable incident that took place at our store in Annapolis, Maryland. We have suspended the employee involved in this incident pending further investigation, and have communicated our deepest apologies to the customer for this negative interaction.
We believe, following our initial investigation, that the label was made in error. However, this is not the warm and welcoming experience we want to create for our customers and we are actively working to ensure this does not happen again. We are exploring other opportunities to better train our staff in understanding cultural and racial sensitivities, to ensure all future interactions are welcoming and inclusive."

7News has also received a copy of the apology letter from an Impeccable Brands spokesperson to Pugh.
Ms. Monique Pugh,
We spoke earlier this week regarding your experience at our Annapolis Mall location.
First and foremost, please allow me to apologize once again for the experience that occurred Saturday. While we have investigated the incident and believe that our employee mistakenly labeling your cup in this way, regardless, I understand the hurt and frustration this has caused you. We can do better. As an immediate step, I have taken action with the employee and have addressed their behavior with them directly.
Alongside that, we will provide additional training for all employees at this location, something we have already begun looking into. And finally, I want to do my best to be sure that this experience does not happen again to any of our customers in the future. I have worked with Starbucks to make sure that the word printed on your drink label cannot ever be printed on any label in my store moving forward. With these steps in place, I feel confident that we will do better and offer the warm and welcoming experience that you and all other customers expect from any of our locations in the future.
While I know none of this will be able to take away the hurt you may have felt that day and the days following, I hope that our actions show that we take this very seriously and value what you have shared. Thank you again for bringing this to our attention, and we are looking forward to helping rebuild your trust in the future.
Please let me know if you would like to discuss further.
Very sincerely,
Amit Sehgal

Pugh didn't seem much interested in it. Her thoughts on the apology?
"That it was bogus. And the fact that they keep saying it was an honest mistake...so now it's an honest mistake and a labeling error?" she asked. "If you didn't hear my name, you should have said, 'excuse me can you repeat yourself?' Not once did she do that. She labeled me what she wanted to label me."

Those sorry ass racists bastards didnt even offer her a free frappe! Lol, fucc dem bastards, stop giving those muthafuccaz ya money. Negroes is str8 up weak. Wont stand up or stick together for a gottdamn thing!
